I am a little confused about the core 2 duo series. I have read lots of reviews saying that a 1.86GHz core 2 duo E6300 can outperform a pentium 4 3GHz. Is there a way to calculate the speed compared to the old pentium series. If not, then how do you know whether for example, a 3.4GHz PC game will run on it or not?
The GHz = preformance ratio is really a thing of the past, but to the avg consumor this can get confusing, because it was not until recently that processors companies ditched the GHz symbol in their processor line. Even to this day a lot of new programs that just recnetly came out still use the old Ghz symbol method for requirments. I have only seen a handful of new software porgrams that add system reuirments for Ghz speed symbol and or Ghz speed rating ratio symbol.
Yeah the ghz this has is long gone (that is why Intel got there butts kicked by AMD for the past few years util the finnaly came out with the conroe. The x6800 can be overclocked limitlessly!
And we all learnt that net-burst was nothing more then overhype from Intels Pentium line. I mean, wasn't this the same net-burst that was suppose to give Pentium 4's a 10ghz clock speed? Well we all seen how that turned out.
by their rating number. For example 3000+, 920, T2500, X2-60, X2 4200+, E6300 etc. In the near future it's all going to be ratings because that's how Intel and AMD are rating their processors now instead of GHz speed.
This review should give you some idea of the speed of the Intel Core 2 Duo line. For comparison Anand threw in an Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 965 [3.73GHz].
Sabertooth>>>>E6300 ~ 6.3GHz (compared to an older P4)
Shirley you must be joe king. unless you are refering to SuperPi only. and which P4 are you comparing it to? >>>>>> I have just read that review comparing these processors and found the e6300 to be slower than some AMD's and P4's. more like 4ghz+ ????? in most apps. But extreamly good value though.once overclocked. ;))
I'm planning on getting an antec take 4 case with a p5w dh & E6700 (though the quatro's look like the might be prime for audio workloads). I'm going to be loading the case into a flight case so i can go around the country with it, so i cant be loading up the aase with water cooling and all that jazz... I plan on using a zalman 7500 or 9500, but i have yet to conclude that such a piece of hardware is fully mobile...
My question is two-fold
what should i overclock the E6700 to, and for such a frequency, what would be the best ram and ration to use with such a setup?
Well first of all, you really don't need an E6700 as this cpu is almost identical to the E6600 except for the multiplier which is 10 vs. 9 for the E6600, and 266mhz lower as well. You will also save over $300 to spend on other components.and Have a CPU with better Performance (once overclocked)than the E6800 Core 2 Extreme, which is currently @ $1500.
And for overclocking, most all core 2's will clock to 3.6ghz on a decent system on air with decent cooler. But you better have decent powersupply / motherboard to sustain reliability. For you, traveling with the system, you are better off to clock it to 3.2ghz. So heat isn’t an issue
I heard that the stock cooler is ok for 3.0ghz... any higher and stability problems on some systems. Get the E6600 and couple it with a Thermalright Ultra-120 cooler ( it is one hell of a beast, but you could make a bracket from cooler to case, [it has been done on some website] and stabilize it for transport).also get some DDR800 memory. so when you overclock, you drop multiplier to 8 and raise the FSB to 400, instead of the stock 266mhz FSB. That will give you a cpu which is well over the rating of the Expensive E6800 Extreme which is clocked at 2.93ghz. And the extra bandwidth from the 400FSB would make for an extremely high end system. Memory 400 (DDR800) and FSB 400. 1:1 ratio.
Sorry AMD, I was once a P4 fan, then crossed over to AMD after being hooked. But intel did it again, got me back.( reminds me of changing telephone companies. Start with one, get convinced to change over because of better deal, then switch back again and so on.....
Thats my plans for a very merry Xmas this year. I do a lot of MPG to DVD and this is going to make for a killer encoder. :))
