I was curious about overclocking and was looking at my BIOS. I had read that for overclocking, it is best to have your cpu and ram set at a 1:1 ratio. Well I was looking at the different stuff in my BIOS, and on the cpu clock speed it can be raised from minimum 100 mhz to maximum 132 mhz. On my ram clock speed, There is something like "auto set by spd", something else, 100 mhz, 133 mhz, 166 mhz, another speed, and 200 mhz. Well that presents the problem that if the max I can increase my cpu clock speed to is 132, I can't do the 1:1 ratio thing. Not sure what I am missing here, I am new to overclocking, so help would be appreciated.

Also, what is that "spd" thing anyway? It has that option on several different things in BIOS.

Thanks for the help guys, like I said I am new, so bear with me here.

SPD = Serial Presence Detect. Basically, it's the info that's preprogrammed into a chip on your RAM. The BIOS reads the SPD & automatically adjusts the RAM settings based on that info.

There are quite a few settngs that need to be addressed when overclocking...it's not a simple as just raising the FSB

Well do you know of any good links I should read up on to successfully overclock my processor? I know celerons suck, so I figure maybe overclocking it would make it a little better.

You've got 2 strikes against you...you have Celeron & it's in a Compaq. Compaq's generally aren't very overclockable. The BIOS settings are deliberately crippled to prevent too much user tampering...this cuts down on tech support calls.

Do you have the option to increase the CPU voltage (vcore)? Can you lock the PCI/AGP at their default speeds of 33/66MHz? If not, increasing the FSB from 100MHz to 112MHz is the safe max. Any higher than that & you risk all sorts of problems, the worst of which would be data corruption on your hard drive.

At 112MHz, your CPU speed would increase to 2.8GHz, but chances are, you'll need a voltage boost to be able to pull it off. Even so, the perfoemance difference will be minor.

Yes, I can adjust the cpu voltage thing. Should I raise it .05volts, .1? .15? Also, should I do any tinkering with the DRAM clock speed and voltage? Leave it at the SPD thing? put it on 100 mhz, 133, 166, ect?

Not sure if I can lock the PCI AGP thing, I will check real fast.

I got this Biostar mb a while back because my old one went bad or something, I don't know if that makes a difference.

Ok I did not find the thing about locking the AGP/PCI and default of 33/66 mhz, in case I am missing something, what would it be under in BIOS?

Thanks for the help in advanced jam.

I was seriously contemplating buying a P4, they aren't expensive at only 80$, and that would be a huge performance upgrade, would it not?
