Comment: Didn't know where this belongs.. here goes: - Computer won't turn on at all. I get a green power light and hard drive flashes. No floppy disk flashes. NIC light comes on in the back, keyboard lights flash. - Monitor won't come on as if there's no signal there (immediately goes into sleep mode) - Had problem trying to install new RAM. We found out his computer was picky so we left the new RAM out and put the (2) 32 MB SDRAM back to same slots (1 and 2) -Worked for about 6 months, same error but no ram change! - HD light comes on for about 6 or 7 seconds then goes out. - Both CD drives light up then stop - HD clicks for a brief moment and stops - Boot disk does no good as floppy drive doesn't read - Removed all extras.. NIC, vid capture, tried each stick of ram in by itself (Two 32-Meg chips and 1 64 meg chip, any combination) - If i take the IDE ribbon out of the 2 cd drives the hd light goes out quicker - Even removed vid card to see if we could at least get the computer to beep in error or boot into windows. no luck. - Was working LAST NIGHT! Quit again today. - NEC Ready 9880 model with PII 333 MHz, (2)- 32 Sticks of SDRAM (pc100), 8 gig HD, 2 CD roms (1 is an aftermarket burner), aftermarket NIC, aftermarket vid card, aftermarket vid capture ANY clue at all? We've tried everything, stripping everything out, we believe it's the BIOS because it used to give us errors when we had added the ram to no avail. When we would return it to its original config, it would say "You have lowered the amount of RAM" and continue booting. Now we cant get the computer on at all. We've stripped out everything, not a single change. Tried disconnecting all disk drives. What to do?

Reply: (edit)A bad bios setting wouldn't cause a no beep situation with the video card out. Have you tried to reset the BIOS with a jumper on the motherboard( J1 or J4)?

Reply: (edit)I have the same problem. But if i leave my computer 5 minutes in the halted on state, and then reboot the whole computer, all works fine. The advice I got, was get a new powersupply. Still not sure if this is what is really wrong. But consider the powersupply.

Reply: (edit)before u try doing anything messed up... here's what u have to do... dont panic and follow this... remove all devices...
just use the mainboard and the power supply if the fan spins on dat sucker, it means dat your motherboard is still working properly and so is your power supply. then plug in one things at a time to see if which hardware is defected. then make sure all your cables are right and seated properly, and your volt settings on anything are right. if anything goes wrong then i suggest u grab a baseball bat and smash dat lil shiet =p enjoy

Reply: (edit)I have the exact same problem and it is driving me insane. I have a 333mhz pentium2 4gb hard drive 64mb ram modem graphics card my computer is working fine at the moment but i had to turn it on about 30 times to day to get it to work which is annoying when i have to do work. does anyone know why this would happen? because as far as i can conclude it can't be the motherboard or bios as it works some time. I have tried fidling around with all the cables, unplugging them and pushing them in again with no success. If anyone could help me i would be most grateful liam

Reply: (edit)i was having a similar problem: when turning on the computer, it would just beep indefinetely and nothing would load, the monitor would go to sleep in 10 seconds as well as the hd light. so, after reading all of the messages above, i decided to turn on the computer again, disconect the speaker cable(so it's not as annoying) and left the computer on for 5 minutes, after that, turned it off, took out the only memory card that the computer had, also plugged in the keyboard and mouse(since they were unplugged in my last tries), and turned it back on, and buala!! it boots up!! then turned it off, inserted the memory card back again and now it's fine! i still don't know what fixed it, but it got fixed so i hope this helps,, Ivonne

Reply: (edit)I've had the same problem as well. Mine is a AMD Athlon 750 with a 300W power supply. It started doing it out of the blue, it seemed like no reason at all. Then it stopped for the seemingly same reason. Then recently it has started doing it again, nothing has been changed or modified, it has me stuped. I think I will start by getting a new power suppy, this one seems weak anyway for a 750.

Reply: (edit)The problem is more then likely with the motherboard getting stuck in sleep mode. It has something to do with a momentary switch when the computer is powered off. Diabling the Advanced Power Settings in the bios will allieavate the situation but of course the real trick is getting the computer to come on to get into bios. The exact symptons of this are as follows: You press (and in some cases hold) the powerbutton. Everthing powers up for a split second and then goes off. To get computer back on power off the system and pull the power cord. Then remove the baterry from the motherboard. Wait about 20 minutes and then replace the battery and attempt to powerup the system. Get into bios and disable any advanced power functionality. (Hopefully your mobo manufacturer will release a patch to fix this very annoying problem.)

Reply: (edit)The second computer that I built I was having similar problems. I could press the power and the harddrive and the fans and drives would start up the monitor wouldn't come up. I got frustrated so I pulled the power cable out of the power supply to shut it off. Then I pressed the power on the computer again and the computer came and but this time I heard a "beep" from my computer and then my monitor came on. I only tell you that it beeped because when it doesn't work I don't hear that beep from the computer. The monitor will also stay on if I select "reboot" on the shutdown option, it will just go directly to the bios and start up. I will try the ram and the new power supply. This is the strangest problem that I have ever had. If anyone has any ideas please email me back at icy_eyes_oo@hotamil.com Thanks!

Reply: (edit)Hello, Well computer fans, as you can tell they can be many reasons for a computer not turning on. The easiest thing is start with process of elimination. 1. Take every card and piece of memory out of your computer, also unplug the power on all the drives. 2. Now try and boot just the motherboard. If the computer stays on then you know your motherboard is more than likely not having any problems. Don't worry about beeps. 3. If the computer still won't stay on then it is either a power supply (if you get no power at all) or a motherboard (acts very weird), or a power switch. If it is a micro-switch then you may have to by pass it by unplugging it from the motherboard, and plugging the reset button to where you pulled the power switch. 4. Shut the computer down and add your memory sticks, and then test the power again. If it acts up again it is your memory. 5. Shut the computer down and then add power back to the drives and then make sure it still boots up. 6. If all is well add one card back at a time till you make sure all works well, or atleast you will find the animal that is causing your problem. I hope this helps someone out there. Sharon

Reply: (edit)hmmmm, im not the only one to be having this problem then! makes me feel slightly better... my problem is, i turn the power on to my computer, fans kick in, hard drives click to say there alive, power light comes on, hard drive light comes on, but...... my floppy drive light is stuck on constantly, and when i do flick the power switch to turn the computer on the "no connection" signal on my monitor dissapears and the returns straight away, its just not booting and telling my monitor to come on... i have ripped everythin out and put it all back in one by one... i bought a new motherboard and cpu and still had problems, eventually got it working for a few days only for it to not work again when my dad wanted to test my old motherboard to see if it would work...it didnt, when i put it all back together thinkin it would work being all new stuff, it didnt..now i have another new cpu and it still wont come on, im thinking that its nothing to do with my hardware but more of a communication problem or something...HELP! i have put a dent in my case cause im so f$*&ed off, he he, calm down, calm down hope someone can help... one more thing SHARON in your statement what do u mean by point number 3 about the power switch and the reset switch?? sounds interesting.... :)
