Hey Guys, my computer for no reason sometimes Shuts itself down and then turns itself back on. Doesn't matter if I'm on the Internet, Writting a letter, or playing a graphic intense game. One minute i'll be on and no Probs, the next it turns itself off and then back on. Not to mention what ever software I'm running gets all jack up.
I'm running:
Asus A7N8X MoBo W/ a 1800+ xp CPU. 512 DDR PC2700, Asus Gforce 3 Ti 200, 1 cd-rom, 1 cd-rw, floppy, 80Gig HHD, Creative Xgamer Sound Card, modem, and 4 fans.
BUT... I have a 400 Watt GENERIC power supply running 30A on the 3.3V Rail, 25A on the +5V Rail, and 11A on the +12V Rail.
ITS THE +12V RAIL RUNNING 11 AMPS that I'm concerned about. I was reading that All P4 and Newer AMD 1700+ chips run on the +12V Rail. Is this the reason why my Puter is shutting itself down. Is anyone familiar with what I'm talking about? Please Help.

I don't know if your psu or not? But I had a chaintech CT-7AIVL w\a AMD 1.33gig processor that used to do the same thing it turned out to be incompatable memory. It needed memory that operated at a 2 or 8 x's multiplier; if you used 4x's it would do the same thing restart no apparent reason. recheck your mobo manual and look for any fine print under the memory???Hope it helps

Yup, could be overheating, not enough power, or bad ram.

Sounds like a weak PSU for sure here. 4 case fans must use a fair bit of power and then teh GF3 TI and drives adds upto a fair amount of power needed. Could you have a look in the BIOS and report back what the voltages are at? 3.3V, 5V & 12V rails.

Did you mean the +12V rail is at 11V? if you did that is too low and is whats causing the problems.

Yes.. My +12V Rail is running @ 11 Amps !! I found a Website that breaks down the power supply needs of each component on your computer and what rail feeds the power. With all that I have my +12V rail needs to be at a minimum 13 amps but recomended a power supply that feeds 16-18 Amps.
I went out and bought an 350 ANTEC PSU. That supplies 16 Amps to the +12V rail. Everything seems to be running fine now!!
Thank You everyone for your help and Input.

I got a PSU of 300 watt GENERIC on a Gigabyte Kt400 333mhz FSB(280 running)with a 1700+ ovclk @1.540 140x2 , 256mb DDR 333mhz , Ge-force2 mx-400 , SB 128 PCI , LG CD-burner 12x8x32 , USB Printer , USB Modem (Alcatel), USB Scanner & i can burn a cd @12x and surf the net & print a doc.at the same time without any problemms ,oh yea i got 2 80mm fans.
so i don't think it's you power supply maybe more your memory but i really think that it's HEAT.

Well AMD TEch.. My computer Idles at 49C and I really don't punch it too much harder than that. And its at when I'm between 49-51C that it shuts down... Now I know you know that this temp is way below OverHeating!! I do admit that it could be that my RAM Memory is bad. However, once again I have spoken to many people now in person and in different forums about my Prob, and when I told them I was running all that I was on an 11 Amp Rail... And I kid you not, They all laughed and said Get a better power supply. I have since done so.. And as of a day and a half I have had ZERO probs... When it was normal for my computer to have turned off at least 2-5 times by now!!!! Crossing Fingures I solved my Problem.

Good for you Robert , but to many people jump on the conclusion that when they got a problemm it must be the PSU not always the case.
If you use your computer Normaly no overclock & only one thing at the time so on.. a 300 watt is enought but i think some people wont to do to much with their computers it's a nice tool but got to be gentil with it.

And i think a very small portion of peolpe out there may have some video card or sound card ,Ethernet card etc..(Cheepper Brand or) that has a defect & pull to much power AMPS that it should do, so these poeple need bigger power supply.

Another thing is not to forget is more you go higher in wattage for a PSU the more you gona get more AMPS(Strong) by volt & to much can make every electronic parts blow out (Burn) from a current to strong.

So this what i think a 300 watt for normal use or a 400 watt (In some case higher)for overclocker's or peolpe do use a few things together.

BTW:When i did my three thing at same time (did that once) the only thing that appen is my printer was very slow but that was it.

Right on.. Thanks AMD Tech.. Who says you don't learn something new everyday... Thanks for your help and input. Crossing my fingers because now I'm going on 2 days and no mishaps.. =) and you something else I realized.. My computer actually runs 4-6 degrees cooler at idle and when I'm playing Video games like Unreal 2003. Before my Puter would idle at 50-52C, Now it idles at 46-48C... Very Cool! Next Stop... Overclocking..!!! Hey also.. I think you might be interested in this article on PSU's Really.. check it out, It's very informative and interesting. WWW.Firingsquad.com Go to reviews tab and on the next page their is an article on PSU's Trust Me.. Take a look.

Robert i read the article about PSU got some good info there ,thanks!

BTW:the give for a GENERIC 300 watt
20a +3.3v
30a +5v
10a +12v
ANTEC
28a +3.3v
35a +5v
16a +12v
so they said to stay away from the one that give 10or12a on tyhe +12v get one with higher numbers well my PSU is a Generic (Standard)Tiger pro $35. CDN & i got
14a +3,3v
30a +5v
15a +12v
so my PSU is not bad execpt for the +3.3v but not to bad it's almost only for my memory
so maybe if i wont to overclock my FSB more i'll need to change it but for now it's ok enought for the cpu.
