Hi, I have a compaq presario v2000 laptop that keeps shutting down, i recently had to have the fan replaced because the old one stopped working and the computer kept shutting off like it is now, but the fan i just put in it works perfectly i removed the heatsink and put it back on but the system still keeps shutting off after about 2 mins of being on, could this now be a problem with the processor?

"could this now be a problem with the processor?"

Not likely. You probably didn't reinstall the heatsink & fan correctly. Did you use thermal compound? If not, that's your problem.

"there is already thermal compound on there"

You can't re-use old thermal compound. It should have been completely removed, both the top of the CPU & bottom of the heatsink should be thoroughly cleaned with alcohol, then a fresh layer of thermal paste applied. You need no more than a dab about the size of a grain of rice.

I tried putting a new thermal pad on there and it still does the same thing

Did you clean off the old thermal compound first? If not, as jam suggested, use rubbing alcohol to clean off all the old compound, and then apply a new layer of thermal paste. What kind of new thermal pad did you use?
