OS: Win XP Home SP1
CPU/Ram: AMD XP3000+ 512Mb
Comment:

I was given a computer as a present and it has always crashed randomly throughout it's lifetime, 4-5 months. I upgraded the ram to 512 in case this was the problem but still it freezes. Checked the temp and the CPU is in the MID 40's with the side off and an office fan blowing into the case, lol. Anyway. Do you think the problem could be that the CPU has been overclocked to appear as a 3000+ and this may be causing the problems??? I really have no idea and am loathed to take it to a repairer cos they will charge me an arm and a leg to replace a transistor.

basic system specs:
AMD 3000+
512 ram
Asrock K7VM4 mother/b
V92 modem PCI
No other PCI devives or AGP device

Hi,
Firstly i would go into the bios and check the settings (do this by pressing delete button before windows boots)check your fsb is at default (166) and then check your vcore (cpu voltage) is at 1.65v. Basicaly check that everything is at default, this will tell you if your cpu is what you say it is...
Also .. what memory are you running..? 512mb of what...??

Ive noticed that in your system specs you are saying you have no AGP Device.... ? Dude... !!! you must have ..because that is what your monitor lead plugs into..!!!

Abit NF7s V2.0 Mobo
Radeon 9800xt 256mb,
AMD 3000xp CPU @222x11,
Q-tec 550w psu,
2X512 xms corsair Pc3500 in dual channel,
Twin 10k Raptors (raided)
waterchill cooled..

Onboard video?

thegul,

Are you saying that your CPU HAS been overclocked to run as a 3000+? or you suspect that it's overclocked to run as a 3000+?

There are two different versions of the 3000+...one runs at 2167mhz (13 x 166mhz)...the other runs at 2100mhz (10.5 x 200mhz). The problem may be with your RAM...you'd need PC2700 to run at 166mhz (333FSB) or PC3200 to run at 200mhz (400FSB). If you have PC2100, try lowering your CPU FSB to 133mhz (266FSB). You'd be underclocking your CPU, but your system should stablize.

Download CPUZ (version 1.22) to find out what you have & what your current settings are:

Alright, sorry about the delay in replying, been taking everything off and reinstalling all the gear.

In answer to overclocking_freak 512Mb PC3200 DDR-SDRAM (two 256mb sticks) don't know the make, sorry.

just put in a graphics card to help the system 128mb radeon 9200SE ATI (in the AGP slot which was previously empty which is what i ment to say before.)

Using both speedfan and CPU-Z the Vcore is fluctuating around 1.73, 1.74.

CPU-Z states the clock is running at 2165.6MHZ
multiplier x11

FSB 196.9

Bus speed 393.7

Do these numbers seem reasonable??? They seem pretty similar to those you guys are suggesting i should have.

cheers for your help guys. soryy for being an ignorant twat.

nope thats not right, athlon 3000+'s run at 13 * 166 if its the 333 mhz fsb version. looked like somebody got duped. Unless it's an unlocked 3000+ where they would have lowered the multi and upped the fsb. but probably only a 2500+ I know this because i own a 3000+ and a 2500+
