My Compaq Deskpro XL5120, although long-in-the-tooth, is still a useful PC. However, I wish to replace the processor with a faster version.

The processor board (number 213127-001, ID code CPQ9A83) has no switches or links and, on examination, it's clear that the configuration is set by software (& stored somewhere). The configuration-editing utility (on floppy) for the machine doesn't allow me to change the processor speed, so whatever CPU I've pluged in, it always runs at 120MHz (set by the CPU's BF0 & BF1 pins).

Does anyone know the solution to this prob.? & has anyone got the software to do the job?

I've looked on Compaq's web-site, but can find nothing but the basic Config. utility.

Cheers.

It’s unlikely that you will be able to enhance your computer’s performance significantly with a CPU upgrade.

You might see some improvement with more RAM or a PCI/IDE adapter and a faster HDD.

If this computer is still useful, leave it alone and get a new, faster one. Right now, very powerful computers with all the bells and whistles can be had for cheap.
