Hello Iam a user of a "trusty" COMPAQ DESKpro 2000 witha 133Genuine INTEL CPU.
I have been trying to upgrade it to a EVERGREEN TECHnologies SPECTRA 400 (AMD k6-2)
kit. I have had no luck with this. The install disk(floppy) says "BIOS is not found" . I know for a fact that COMPAQ uses a ROMpaq "flashable" ROM chip-hard soldered on the MOtherboard.
Compaq,s latest ROMpaq is only for updating HARDRIVE sizes (recognizing above 8gig).
Is it "possible" to flash a second or third party BIOS onto this 97 -era "workstation"
to accept this faster more effeicient CPU???

Yes, if you can find a BIOS for it. I looked for over a year for one so I could upgrade a Compaq with a K-6 266MMX to any type of K6-2 or K6-III. Never found one. I was even willing to buy a new BIOS chip. I ended up O/C ing the 266 to 366Mhz and later downed it to 333Mhz. That has been a couple of years ago, and the computer is still used by a friend today. I even spent money on a "Powerleap Adapter" (also known as a "Golden Socket"), but the outdated BIOS was the problem. Compaq uses non-standard motherboards so its almost impossiable to know what you have in the first place.
