Comment:

I am going to be changing my mobo and processor in a few days, and would like any advise available. I have a pretty good idea of what I have to do, but don't know any specifics about setting the BIOS(fsb and such) It will be a soyo kt400 with the amd 2400. First I would just like to get the thing running and then I will ask about overclocking. I will be putting this into a gateway case that has my old 550 p3 in it. I am guessing that it is an ATX case. any info would help. I will probably be getting another stick of 256 ram. also sorry this is kinda long. Thanks

I am fairly new at this, so I don't have a lot of advice, however, I do have a link you should read.

From this, I would say you will have to get a new power supply. If you don't have a preference, TigerDirect.com has a basic one for around $30. + shipping.

Have fun

Your case might not be a standard ATX case. Brand-name computers like to do that to thwart you in your upgrade attempts. A new case might be in order.

I beleive that if you can buy 400watt already in case. they got some real nice ones for around $65
Also, as for memory, these days I wouldn't concider anything less then DDR memory
and look at it close, for $10 extra you can get realy fast stuff ( 333 ) instead of (266)
just some more to think about

kt400 boards does not support SDRAM after all. So if you buy RAM it is DDR ram not the old SDRAM that from the gateway.

A new power supply unit is defintely needed if your old powersuppy is any less than 350watts.

Thanks guys, I do have a new power supply on the way. I ordered it the same time as the board. It is going to be 400w. And as for ram, I am going to be using two 256mb pc2100 ddr that I got for $30 each from officedepot. What I was looking for was about whether the case would work, and if there is any special setup I need to do, or can I just throw it all in there and start it up. Thanks again

As Amourek said, the case may not be stadard ATX, but even if it is and the board physically fits, some of the manufacturers have non standard connectors such as power button, hdd led, power led, ect. I cant remeber if gateway is one of these manufacturers. This is a simple thing to remedy if you can find out which wires go to which LED and splice into them with some standard connectors. You may want to open your case and see if your computer is standard conectors or not, if its one big panel and not individual connectors, chances are you will have to change them...

why would you buy a kt400 and want to use sdram that would be stupid since the kt400 mother boards were ment for ddr400 or pc3200
