I'm helping a friend fix his system, and I need some help here. His mobo died. He has an Athlon 1 Ghz T-Bird CPU. I've picked up (from a reputable computer store) a replacement mobo which will accommodate his existing CPU and memory. Asus A7V333. Everything fits real nice just like they said it would. However, setting up the clock/bus speed has me stumped. I've done this a couple of times in the past on older boards, but all the jumpers were there. I just got the cpu spec and set each jumper. This board is different.

The CPU chip is labeled XC-A1000AMT3C-266. It's the 266 part here that has me puzzled. The mobo has one set of dip switches (SYSCLK) for setting the speeds, but they only go up to 230. In the mobo manual, this dip switch is for Motherboard Frequency Settings on one page and on the next page the same switch is shown for CPU External Frequency Selection (CPU MHZ 100, 133, 166, 140, 150, 170, 180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 230). The manual also says by setting a certain jumper and leaving all the switch positions in the OFF state, this clock setting can be done in the bios. I've gone through the manual and all board jumpers (relative to this issue) are in the factory default settings with one exception. The ROMSIP 3 pin jumper. It's set to enable the use of preset ROM data from the (CPU) chip. Could this be my lifesaver?

Should I be ignoring this 266 that's on the end of the CPU chip label? I don't want to chance powering this thing up and frying his CPU. I've done searches in the General Hardware and this forum for "bus clock" and come up with hits, but there's talk of multipliers, clock speeds, bus speeds, etc which has me more confused now. I've found one reference to the chip on the net and it states that this 266 is the FSB (Front Side Bus) whatever that is. The operating voltage for the cpu is 1.75.

Any insight here would be much appreciated.

The jumper for your CPU External Frequency Selection should be set to 133. This will give you your 266 as it is double pumped.

BTW, the A7V333 you can set to jumperless and can do all the settings in the bios.
The cpu should be detected correctly automatically if you do that.

And 133MHz is correct. The 1GHz TBirds had been sold with 100 and 133MHz and with DDR Ram that's counted double!

Thanks folks. I checked back and saw darksea's response (only one at the time I checked) so I went ahead and powered it up. (Just needed a little re-assurance.) Worked like a charm.

This is the newest mobo I've ever done this on so it was all new to me. The machine is humming right along.

Thanks to all.
