Ok, here's my current rig : It's a P4 Prescott 3.2 @ 3.52 (Socket 775) (58 celcius idle and 68 at load), memory of 1024 (2 512 (3200 @ 3520) in dual channel), a Chaintech 6600GT, WD SATA Hard drive (200Go) and a mobo Chaintech Zenith V915P.

I'm really not satisfied by my cpu temperature so I'm about to make some serious changes to lower it. Here's what I planned to get :

ARCTIC SILVER 5 HIGH-DENSITY POLYSYNTHETIC SILVER THERMAL COMPOUND 3.5 GRAM
$13.79

THERMALRIGHT XP-120 S478/754/939 120MM ALUMINUM HEATPIPE COOLER FAN NOT INCLUDED
$63.73

THERMALRIGHT LGA775 RM FOR LGA775 MOTHER BOARD
$6.55
(The price is in canadian dollars)
I know I'll have to put a fan on that XP-120 but I wonder if my actual intel stock fan could fit on it (take a look : http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...581&CatId=1588)
If you don't think it would fit then what fan do you suggest?

I also plan to buy another PSU at the same time (take a look at my actual case/PSU duo : http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/Sea...5&Sku=D15-1010)
I don't really know what PSU I should get (but I know I don't want to put much money on it (less than 100$...). Could you suggest me one?

something with more than 1 fan on the psu. you could get like 2 fans to blow on the heat sink if u can figure out how to rig it.

I tried the 2fans on 1 cpu trick and all it did really was make the bottom fan over spin and it killed it.

Those temps are not that bad for an P4 really.

Dude, you're gonna end up throwing a bunch of money at your "problem" & you'll end up being unsatisfied with the results. I suggest you do some googling before spending $75+ to lower your temp maybe 5C. The Prescott runs HOT..it's the nature of the beast. The temps you're seeing are normal.

Why don't you mod the case to accept a fan in the side cover with a tube connected to the fan housing to the cpu fan. Both blowing the same way of course. I have done this and all I get is outside air blowing on the cpu. Not preheated case air. I also have one of those two fan ps. The one in the back blows out as normally and the one directly over the cpu heat sink blows out also. This way the air comes in from the outside through the 80mm fan to the cpu heat sink out through the ps to the outside. My amd xp2200 (1.8) running at 2408 does not get over 45c at the most.
I was looking at a HP shelf model computer and they had something similar but did not have a fan in the tube.
I do electrical work...I mention this 'cause I don't want someone telling me "that could be dangerious" which it could be to a novice but the fan I use for the cover is a 80mm ac fan hooked directly into the 115v connection inside the ps and only comes on when the computer comes on. It is quite and pulls a lot of air. The tube was made with poster board and connects to the heat sink fan via of a 80mm fan adapter.

Here is my Prescott setup -
It's been running for a bit over a year with the exception of case change.

http://www.madshrimps.be/?action=getarticle&number=6&artpage=872&articID=225

I've switched to OCZ Powerstream, 12 volt rail is now solid running @255 FSB 3.57 GHz @1.525 Vcore while temps remain unchanged.

LGA775 runs a bit cooler than S478.
Getting a case with good ventilation is more than just the "look".

54*C at max load (ie 2 folding clients) with a LGA775 3.0GHz here (stock HSF) - although I've noticed the socket 478 equivalents do seem to run a little hotter too. If your ambient temperature is over 40*C then case cooling is the way to go first :)

P4 LGA775 3.0GHz
2x256Mb DDR2 533MHz
XFX 6800GT PCI-E
