I got a tip from a bud that maybe the reason my system is unstable at highers clok speeds is because my timing are too close, and i hvnt set dividers on my ram. Im kinda lost because I dont know where in my mobo I would do this. Once again my rig is: 4400x2 @ 2.6 7900GTX 2x1gig of xms pc3200 250 x2 raid o A8N-32 sli deluxe
This stuff was explained that to you a LONG time ago.
There are certain criteria that have to be met when overclocking any CPU & a few that pertain specifically to the A64. I'm not gonna look at your board's manual again so some of these settings may not apply....
- lock the PCI at 33MHz - lock the PCI-E at 100MHz - disable all Spread Spectrum settings - disable Cool 'n Quiet
- set the HT multi so that the HyperTransport bus doesn't exceed 1000MHz. This will depend on what your CPU freq is set at (HT bus = HT multi x CPU freq). If you don't have an actual HT multiplier setting, your HT (aka LDT) choices will be 600, 800, 1000...these correspond to 3x, 4x, 5x.
- set the RAM divider so that your RAM doesn't over-overclock as the CPU freq is increased. This setting varies from BIOS to BIOS. Some have a CPU:DRAM ratio setting, such as 1:1, 6:5, 3:2...some have 2/2, 2/1.66, 2/1.33...others don't list an actual ratio at all, it simply kicks in when you manually set the RAM speed (DDR400 = 1:1, DDR333 = 6:5, DDR266 = 3:2). You can generally expect PC3200 'valueRAM' to overclock to about 220MHz. Higher quality RAM *should* do better. Increasing the voltage & relaxing the timings *may* allow you to squeeze out more MHz. Which memory timings work best depend on the quality of the RAM & what the default timings are.
- raise the CPU freq, keeping in mind how it will affect the RAM & the HT bus speed.
- increase the CPU & RAM voltages as necessary to stabilize the system.
Overclocking should be done methodically & it requires patience. There are no magic numbers...it's trial & error.
There are a few 'tricks' that will help you to define certain limits.
- Temporarily lower the HT multi to the lowest setting available (3x?). This will prevent the HT bus from over-overclocking, regardless of how high you set the CPU freq.
- Temporarily lower the RAM speed to the lowest setting available (133MHz?). This will prevent the RAM from over-overclocking, regardless of how high you set the CPU freq.
- Temporarily lower the CPU multi to the lowest setting available (5x?). This will prevent the CPU from over-overclocking, regardless of how high you set the CPU freq.
Now start raising the CPU frequency to see how high it will go. If you can get it to 300MHz, the HT bus will only be 900MHz, the RAM will be 193MHz, & the CPU only 1.5GHz. If this works, you'll know that your board is capable of at least 300MHz.
Now lower the CPU freq to 200MHz, raise the CPU multi to it's max, & leave the other settings as-is. Start raising the CPU freq to try to determine the max clock speed the CPU can handle...increase the voltage as necessary (within reason) & watch the temps.
Now lower the CPU multi to the lowest setting again, set the CPU freq at 200MHz, set the RAM speed to DDR400, & leave the HT multi at 3x. Start raising the CPU freq (which will also raise the RAM speed) to determine the max speed the RAM can handle...increase the voltage as necessary (within reason). Experiment with the timings.
By doing the above you'll determined the max CPU Freq the board can handle, the max clock speed the CPU can handle, & the max speed the RAM can handle.
Now all you gotta do is find the settings that all the hardware can agree with & run at stably at.
What can I say jam, thatnks a lot.. I guess you are correct about how overcloking is a trial and error process, and that you cant rush it. Rushing it IS what I have been doing, and I mislooked something every time. This time I will not only buy a new psu, but also go through the process you described step by step, running prime every time I significantly change the settings. I guess I just wanted to get over the process quickly and get to some ganing ASAP ^^. Once again thank you.
Well. I have began to test out my sets, but am having trouble changing HT. My cpu-z says its still 940ish, but I changed K8 to NB frequency to 3X. Lowest was 1... but I dont know if that even applyes to HT. So far system is stable at 310X6 (6 is lowest multi). Maybe some1 with my motherboard can help me out again... Thank you.
Im not at this part yet, but how do you change yor ram to ddr400? Again it would help if some1 had my mobo, because it has different options from most other mobos..
ok... so the most my mobo can handle is 317mhz... and the most my cpu can handle is only 2.687. How ever when I run prime for anythings after 2.5, it gives me an error that sais "rounding was .05. Not allowed more then .04". im guessing prime dousnt like voltage at 1.45???? My multryplier is 10, not 10.5, and cpu frequence isnt enyhting weird...260, 270. When I use 250x10, it usually lets me have any voltage I want. Also, when I use 260x10 with vcore under 1.45, it gives me no errors, but cpu-z states that my chip is running at only 2.0GhZ. I still have to figure out my ram limits, but I can not find where to change it:/. Is is in the tab that lets me set a ram limit at incriments of 33 from 100?(100, 133,166...). Help me out plz.
