CPU/Ram: Intel Celeron 2.6GHz 256D
Comment:

I have a Intel Celeron 2.6GHz 256DDRAM and I wish to play games. I have heard ALOT of bad things about Celerons and how ineffecient they are. I am buying a GeForce 4 as at the moment I am running on intergrated graphics. I may also buy 256DDRAM to boost my power. Need I replace my CPU and Motherboard or can I just kit out my PC with those accesories to run games? Cheers

Doubling your RAM to 512mb is a good move...if your board can run in dual channel mode, make sure the stick you buy is the same as the one you have.

Updating to a "real" video card is a good move too. BE careful which Geforce4 card you buy...there are many "flavors" & some are dogs. If you're into gaming, avoid the MX or any with SE in the name.

As for the CPU, give the Celery a shot, you can always upgrade later if the results are unsatisfactory

What motherboard do you have?

I am currently playin Jedi Knight 2 & 3 but would like to move into FPS's and stuff. I'm not sure of the exact type of motherboard or RAM, I think I'd have to take my compa apart to find out. Thanks for the advice

Download SANDRA, or Aida32 (new name is Everest)...it will provide all sorts of info about your system & you won't even have to open the case...yet!

Probably more bad things than it deserves. The celeron makes a mockery of ghz, but not dollars.

If you have the choice between a celery 2.7ghz and a p4 2ghz/400fsb, the celery is better. But it is not better than a 2.2ghz p4. It is because it is (rightly) perceived as an attempt to pull the wool over our eyes, that we overcondemn it.

It also suffers from being packaged with integrated graphics, and often no agp slot, which further drags it down. There are 3dmark2003 scores over 5500 using celerons. Most of us would take that all day long. Equivalent ghz p4s are 25% above that. This is one of the many data sources that point to a p4:celeron ghz ratio of 4:5, ie a 2.5g celeron is like a 2.0g p4.

But in your case, a good agp video card will give you a decent gaming system. Even the mx440 would be okay, but I would not go below that. You can get a Ti4200 for $60-$70.
