Comment: I have a MicronPC Millenia Celeron 700MHz, and I'm looking to upgrade performance. The speed and multiplier are locked...any way to get around this and overclock? The motherboard is a Cascade III GVC 810E DR742E...if I can't overclock and I have to buy a new processor, what would be the way to go?

Reply: (edit)10 to 12 multiplier is max most older motherboard would go. Your 700mhz is 66mhz x 10.5 multi. If you cannot change FSB from 66 to 100 there is not much to can do. The next higher up Celeron is 766mhz which is the highest 66mhz would go. If other components are sound i.e. HD, CD, Sound Card and Video card, I would recommend getting new motherboard, CPU and Ram. As such, there are many options for you in between AMD and Intel depending on your budget. Either AMD or Intel, you will have a much faster system than the 700mhz Celeron.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for the follow-up...Is there a best way to go about trying to change FSB from 66 to 100?

Reply: (edit)Most Intel chip set board will recognize FSB automatically, i.e. 66, 100 or 133 FSB. The question is, do you want to get a processor that your board does not recognize. I recommend you look into the manual before hand. The multiplier is mostly jumper set on the board. It really doesn't pay to upgrade the processor in a 3+ years system. You may end up hating yourself to have made the decision.

Reply: (edit)real_cool: It really doesn't pay to upgrade the processor in a 3+ years system. ????????????? I upgraded my 5 year old system (Asus P2B) from pentium2 350@392MHz to Celeron 733@1232MHz at the begining of the year. For me it really payed because I got a good second system instead of a slow one for around 70$! Zweets13: Have you checked your board for jumpers or the bios for a way to change the speed ??? Or check http://www.bcmcom.com/support.htm if you find your board on it. Your Celeron may run with 1050MHz if you're able to change the fsb from 66 to 100MHz!
If you're able to change the FSB you still need a bios update for a faster cpu (I found a forum site where someone needed a bios update for a 1GHz cpu). You also have to know if your board supports fcpga2 because if not this restricts you to maximal 1,1GHz cpus!
