Subject: Celeron better than P3?

Comment: I'm thinking of getting a notebook that isn't too expensive. I saw that notebooks with Celeron processors are cheaper but I was wondering if they are as good/fast as P3s? And what about Athlon? thanks for your help.

Reply: (edit)Celeron processors do not have a math co-processer and they do not have the same level of cache memory as the Pentium III chips do.

Reply: (edit)Celeron is the budget Intel chip. Pentium is the normal Pentium chip. AthlonXP is the chip the Pentium cry's itself to sleep every night over and wishes it was, LMAOLMAOLMAO. Buy a DESKNOTE, go to www.ecs.com.tw and check them out! You will save about $1000 on the same speed machine, with better hardware.

Reply: (edit)I would recommend against getting an Athlon based notebook. It is an excellent processor in desktops, but no good for notebooks. This is because there is not a good chipset for the AthlonXP to use in a notebook, and no good graphics solution either. Ati was supposed to be making a chipset, but I don't know if they ever released it for the Athlon XP notebooks. Anyway, I would recommend a P3 with a geforce 2 go graphics chipset, unless you find a P4 notebook with a good graphics chipset and a good price.

Reply: (edit)niki, whatever you do dont get AMD athlon based notebook they run extremely hot and dont perform as well as the pentium 111 mobile based notebooks.AMD needs to stick with what they do best [DESKTOPS].I know this as my sister bought an AMD athlon based notebook and was very dissatisfied with performance. It depends on what you need in a mobile unit.Duron based notebooks run far better than the Celeron based units and run a little cooler than the athlons from what i have researched from websites and several magazines i read in helping my sis find a good notebook. There are several Pentium111 notebooks that i would prefer are Toshiba which is what my sister finally bought and she loves it.It has great features as in top of the line nvidia graphics very nice display and surprisingly very good speakers [sound],great all around notebook.Dell probably makes the best pent.111#8100model and the #8200model pent.4 notebooks.IBM Thinkpads are nice but very expensive.Dell and compaqs have good prices depending on features.Im like you i want a notebook now,but i will wait till i have afew hundred more and get either a p111 or p4 it will be better in the long run.these are only my opinions.good luck in whatever you decide on. brock

Reply: (edit)The pentium 3 is dead even a duron runs faster than it. Go AthlonXp or Duron, I can say that the above posts about the athlon not doing very well is a bunch of boloney because AMD crushes intel for the price for MHZ comparison.

Reply: (edit)Ok. Well. The iBuddie (www.ecs.com.tw) comes as a Pentium or Athlon. You should still look mate! 14 inch TFT screen! And as for Intel or AMD for laptop. Mmmm. Given the wealth of experience Intel have in the portable field, I would be probably on the side of Intel on that one. CAN'T BELIEVE IT! lol. BUT. Only if I was buying for my mum. If it was for me, I would still go AMD. Crap. If I could afford a new laptop I would be happy with a celeron!
