Subject: celeron 1.3 G FCPGA on asus CUBXOS: windows98CPU/Ram: cel 533 320M |
Comment: hi, I have as asus-cubx mobo (with intel 440BX chipset, 100MHz FSB, socket 370) The manual said that it support Celeron and FCPGA Pentium3. i currently using it with a celeron 533MHz The question is, I want to upgrade the CPU to a Celeron >1 GHz, FCPGA the manual didnt say anything about FCPGA-Celeron (may be it wasnt out then? - I bought the mobo in 2000) will It work? I have an assumtion that as long as the socket, FSB, chipset fits, a cpu will work on a mobo released earlier(than the cpu) any opinion? thanks.

Reply: (edit)celerons 1.1 ghz - 1.4 ghz won't work on your motherboard without an adapter as they are the new tualatin based models (FCPGA2), even though they fit in the socket. You can either install a coppermine based processor (>=1.1ghz) or get an adapter to install a tualatin based processor or get a new motherboard to install a tualatin based processor. good luck!

Reply: (edit)You can probably use a Celeron 1.1 GHz as long as it has the 128k cache. The new 1.1 based on the tualatin CPU have a 256k cache. The 128k cache models are called 1.1 FCPGA the 256k cache models say 1.1A or FCPGA2. The 128k cache models are getting very hard to find. I just bought one on ebay and it was a drop in replacement for a 566 GHz Celeron.

Reply: (edit)well i just did a bit of reading on this... actually, the 1.1 celeron is the coppermine based processor with 128 k L2 cache the 1.1a celeron is the tualatin based *FCPGA* model with 256k the models 1.2 and above are tualatin based *FCPGA2* with 256k this is to be accurate, but you still can't use your processor with the old motherboard as it has a few other changes aswell. visit tomshardware.com for more details

Reply: (edit)Balram, What you said here is not completely accurate: "the 1.1a celeron is the tualatin based *FCPGA* model with 256k the models 1.2 and above are tualatin based *FCPGA2* with 256k" The Celeron 1.1a with the 256k cache is a "FCPGA2". Intel's website does not list a Celeron 1.1a that is "FCPGA". Only the 1.1 (without the a) with the 128k cache is listed as FCPGA. http://processorfinder.intel.com/scripts/list.asp?ProcFam=49&CorSpd=ALL&SysBusSpd=ALL&PkgType=ALL
