I need help in a bad way. My temp on my PC is always hot hot hot. I have a Tyan Tiger motherboard with dual AMD 1700+MP. 512mb ram ATA100 Maxtor60gb HDD 16x DVD and a Yamaha 24x10x40 CDRW GForce3 and a audigy sound. All in an Antec case and a Antec PSU. I installed HMonitor to see what my temps are at and I could not believe my eyes. My board is at an average 160F or 70c and as for my CPU forgetaboutit my temp’s are always up at the 180F or 80c in witch case my feel save rang is at 185F and it shut down all the time. I have two AMD approved CPU fans and I have six case 80mm fans running. Also my HOSO has no heat in that room yet so can't be the out side air heat.

I definit3ely have to ask you, what wattage is your psu.
I would think you are one of those that they make the 550 watt ATX psu's for.
2 Athlons in one case? EEEK.
On the up side. you could run an exhaust tube from your computer to your bathroom and benefit from a free sauna!
:-)
Seriously, what wattage are you supplying?

This might help lower it a bit..
I have an 1800+/case down to 44c/28c (normal use) with a neat trick.. This trick dropped my temps about 8c. Case has second fan but most cases don't have much for inlet air. Go to a pet shop and get a filter for an Aquaclear 500 (aquarium filter). It is a white, stiff very open cell foam pad. Cut a slice about 1/2" thick off of it and cut it down to fit in a 5.25' floppy case blank. Remove the blank and use the foam to fill the hole. Now not only do you have a larger air inlet, but the flow is usually right towards the chip, and the air is filtered for dust etc!!

Removing faceplates and only filling them with a simple filter can cause problems in some systems. Air can be redirected to that hole and not the back the way it should be. Check your bios and see what kind of readings are you getting there. Also make sure your bios is updated. Are you using the monitor software that came with the board. Not all monitor software give correct readings with different boards. If all this is not causing the problem then i recommend adding a fan on the side near the cpu. Its a little work involved but it lowered my temp by about 10 degree c.

Ok my PSU is a 550watt and my Bios gives me the same reading HOT HOT HOT. I did this test. I unplugged all CD-ROM CDRW removed the sound and video card and unplugged the HDD and still kept my six fans running. The motherboard has a 8mb ATI Rage on it so I used that. I had the PC off over night started it up and looked at the temps in the Bios all at save rang 47c. Left the PC running at the post went and had some Cocoa Pebbles came back in 10mins hit del got in the Bios and looked a the temps and they were at 75c +/- 5c. As for the software I’m using I use the motherboards and HMonitor at the same time so I can tell if the non standard temp software is doing it’s job. I’ve also tried SpeedFun all get the same reading HOT HOT HOT.

what about your heatsink and fan. is this a self install system? If so did you use thermal compound when you installed the heatsink to the cpu? If this is not a self install I would return it to whoever you bought it from and tell them the problem. Those temp. are to high.

Well dont use AMD CPU myself so not sure what the standard temps are I know they run hotter than ther Intel Equivalent CPU.
But have a look at these links to to see if there relevent to youAMD suggest that as long as Core dosent reach 90-95oC you shouldnt have any probs.
But please check this infomation on the links below as.As I say I havent played with AMD CPU's.So dont know the average temp people have.(What ever CPU Intel or AMD none of us wants to damage them)
But as long as this infomation is relevant to your chip you cant get any better advice than the maker. On the second link look at page 6.But look at the first link as it describes what your looking at and you'll be able to tell if its relevant to your setup.http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_873_1130,00.html

Hope this is of some help

I would expect your temps to be somewaht higher than "average" due to the heat caused by two CPUs...but my guess is your airflow is out of balance. Where are your fans positioned & which way is each one blowing? What style case do you have? Is there lots of room inside or is it packed with wires & cards?

Well, I would suggest you get two of those exhaust fans running to outside the case. This will be the only way to take the hot air out of the equasion.

I agree with huh?
are there any airflow restrictions?
Also you say that you have 6 case fans? are they all blowing in various directions? Maybe you should try to arrange them so there is a definite airflow from front to rear. Also is your case possibly too small?

No my case is not small this is a server tower case with lots of room. I also changed to rounded IDE cables for better airflow. As for the fan’s, 3 fans are in the front blowing inbound and 3 are at the rear blowing out bound. Not including the 2 CPU fans blowing case bound. I did find a not so great thing out last night. I popped off the CPU’s fans/heatsink and to my surprise there was no thermo paste. See this is a custom build and I always to them myself but not this one time. I haven’t had the time with work the kids and everything else in life. The hardware was sitting in the boxes for two weeks at my house. So I called the company where I got the hardware and asked how long would it take and the cast $50.00 dollars to do the hardware build but I would load the O/S. Let me say they got it good last night from me. They try saying that to much time has pasted two months from them to do anything yea right. See I am the IT buyer at company and I do a lot of buying from them, so I told the dick clerk to get the owner. I told the owner this was bullcrap and there fault. I wonted to retail boxed AMD 1700+MP to replaced my CPU’s because they most likely have been heat stressed. I also told him if he could not do this form me then I would cut off all buying from his company. Let me finish be saying I picked up my CPU’s at 8am today and with thermo pasted as well. This just goes to show you if you need something done right JUST DO IT YOUR SELF. Thanks for the help.

Yeah...It did sound like no compound was used. You did the right thing. Those cpu's might still be good but I wouldnt wont to keep them after being stressed for 2 months and it wasnt my fault.

P4sucks it was you that mad me look. So a special thank goes out to you. Thanks. I do have a question. The Sir Network Admin at my work and I have a different view about thermo pasted. See I believe that it should only be put on the center of the CPU on the chip that pop’s out of the silicon. He feels that is need to be applied to the inter CPU. Quote if the heatsink covers it than paste it.

just put a drop in the center of the cpu and apply heatsink. when you spread you risk some going over the edge when you apply the heat sink. If you put a drop in the center it will spread when you apply the heat sink.
