I cant get my PCChips M848A rev 2.1 board to run my Athlon TBird 1.4 at 133FSB. Or any other FSB except 100.
I swapped my motherboard and PSU recently since the last two got fried. I put in a PCChips M848A rev 2.1 mobo, and when i booted it, it was running the TBird at 1050MHz, ie 10.5 multiplier (correct) but 100FSB (not correct).
So i went in to the BIOS to see if i could set the FSB, and apparently i could, although it was already set to 133 which confused me.
i changed the DRAM clock ratio so the RAM runs at 166, just in case that made a blind bit of difference, and rebooted.
no change. still 1050MHz. so i go back into the BIOS and change it to 166FSB for the hell of it. reboot. still 1050MHz. It try 100FSB. no difference. I notice the top option in that BIOS menu is "Detect CPU frequency" and it is set to "Manual". So i think maybe if i set it to auto it will get the right setting. But then i realise that the "Detect CPU frequency" item is greyed out and cant be altered.
I then flashed the BIOS to the 22/04/2005 version on PCChips' website. This changes nothing. I download the manual and look for jumpers or anything that might help me change the FSB. nothing.
I am totally stumped. One wierd thing is this motherboard model isnt explicitly mentioned on PCChips' website. they have M848ALU 2.1 or M848A 5.0. Mine is definatly rev 2.1 becuase it says so in huge numbers on the mobo. but it is not ALU it is just A. the A and ALU models both have the same southbridge, and i can't check the northbridge because it's covered with a heatsink, so i cant deduce which one i have from that.
Their website does specifically say the M848ALU 2.1 doesnt support 1.4G Tbirds, and that the M848A 5.0 does. But which one do i have??? it seems to be neither one or the other.

Keep in mind that there were two AMD 1.4ghz that came out. 1 runs at 100mhz bus speed while the other runs at 133mhz. If you can give me the number off of your processor, I can tell you what you have.
Just a thought, you could have been running it at 133mhz on your old mobo. If so, it would have been OCed if you happen to have the 100mhz variety.
YO

Well, if your board isn't listed at PCChips, how did you flash to the newest BIOS? You apparently used the BIOS for the M848ALU 2.1, correct? Regardless of what model you have, PCChips make a crappy product...I wouldn't have wasted the money on it, or for that matter, ANY socket A board based on an SiS chipset.
If you check their website, they may not specifically list your model number, but in the descript of the M848ALU 2.1, they refer to it as the M848A V2.1:
"M848A V2.1 is the most advance and unique module from PCCHIPS production."
And since you said their "website does specifically say the M848ALU 2.1 doesnt support 1.4G Tbirds" (I didn't find that, except that it's not listed on the CPU support chart), why are you even attempting it?
