O.K., so I figured I'd clean the guts of my comp for the 1st time in 3 years, needless to say; VERY DIRTY, specially inbetween fan and heat sink, conveniently stopping airflow. So i pop the fan off the heatsink, and give a tug on the heatsink, comes off easy, attached to the processor which i found out about 10 minutes later that the only way to get the chip into the socket, is when it's NOT attached. i cant get them apart, or onto motherboard. gayness has ensued. what do i do?
I agree with doug_brit about your choice of adjective...you should have used "ignorance" or "stupidity"
It appears that the thermal material has "fused" the heatsink to the CPU. The heatsink should have been gently twisted side to side to get it to release from the CPU...my guess is you just gave it a yank? You're gonna have to somehow hold the CPU, being very careful not to bend the pins, then twist the heatsink to get the bond to break. Then thoroughly clean off the old thermal material & apply a fresh layer of thermal paste. Follow these instructions:
No I didn't use any force on it because I'd be rather irked if I busted it. I twisted it, but only very gently, obviously not enough. Thank you, much appreciation. where would they sell the paste? Any tech place?
They should sell arctic silver paste (or something similar) at any good PC shop or numerous places online. It's usually called thermal transfer paste or grease.
Kudos to jam and doug_brit for upholding some language standards...
OH NO!! THE "PC" COPS ARE HERE - WHO THE HELL CARES IF HE SAYS "GAYNESS"?? USE A DICTIONARY SOMETIME.
Anyway "popping" off the processor with the heatsink is bad, hope you didn't damage the CPU or the socket. Very carefully use a razor blade to seperate the CPU from the heatsink, the clean them both with alky-hol. Apply good thermal compound and reinstall.
As for you politically correct ppl out there - I'm having a gay old time.......<heh>
Rule #1: Good Computers don't go down. Rule #2: There is no such thing as a good computer.
Come on now, Simply put that comment could offend someone, and we allready forget our manners enough in life.
Incidentally that was positively queer that you felt the need to use all caps in part of your reply Rick McNabb.
I just wonder how the processor came out with the heatsink? My AMD chip is locked into place with a lever, and I'm not firmiliar with installing intel chips, so there goes that bit of info lol. I think following the others instructions should well take you to home base though, best of luck.
