I have a dell 2350 and am trying to restore the factory os. i have 2 hard drives installed. before restoreing i backed everthing up on the slave hard drive. i went to restore the os on the master hd (original) and it didnt work.
i got an error message
pxe-e61 media test failure, check cableI also checked and the pc says that no hd is connected.
the original hard drive is set to master and is connected to the black slot on the ide cable. i have no clue what else to do. if anyone has any ideas please help.

To confirm, you have 2 drives. One drive is the original that has Windows XP installed on it, and it is this drive that you want to return to the factory state.
IF that is the case, I would recommend disconnecting the second drive while you are reinstalling Windows. Make sure the original drive is the only one connected to your computer, ensure it is getting power and all cables are tight, then try again.

Why are you restoring XP in the 1st place?
I don't know what your questions have to do with CPUs but I agree with RTAdams89 - temporarily disconnect the 2nd HDD. I don't know how many times I've seen posts from people who accidently reinstalled the OS to the 2nd HDD & lost their data.
The "pxe-e61 media test failure, check cable" error means that the PC is attempting to boot from a network rather than the HDD. The network isn't being detected therefore you're being prompted to check the cable. Did you make any changes to the BIOS?

yeah sorry this probably isn't related to CPU's. Yeah i have disconnected the 2Hdd while trying to reinstall the os. That didnt work. I didn't do anything to the bios as well.
I check and it is saying that it can not find any hdd connected to the ide cable. I have done this same thing in the past and it worked like a charm. Im not sure what is the problem now.

You need to check the master/slave jumper setting & also that the cable is securely connected to both the board & the HDD. What brand HDD is it? Is it alone on the IDE cable or is there another device? If it's a Western Digital, there's probably a jumper setting for master (single) & master (w/slave)...make sure it's set correctly. And if the HDD is alone on the cable, it should be connected to the end plug. Also, double check those BIOS settings.

I checked and the cable is on there good. The hdd is a western digital WD600. And it is the only devise that is connected. And i have check the jumper and it is set to master, but I never knew that there was a master single and master w/slave. If i were a betting Im guessing that this is the problem. I give it a try. thanks

Does your hard drive show up in the BIOS?

It finally worked. It was the jumper settings. After i changed it to cable select it worked. I thought that it would of had to be set at master but it worked. Now though when i connect the 2nd hard drive I get the same problem. "no boot detected, check cable". Now I tried putting the original hdd back to master and the other as slave, but that message showed up again. Any other suggestions?

How about having them both set on cable select?
