Subject: can i use pc 3200 in my rig??? OS: XP CPU/Ram: P4 1.5 / pc2700 748 mb

Comment: my rig has a 400fsb, but with my current memory config i can't get more than 340mhz out of the ddr. can i get some pc3200 or higher ddr instead so i can run the memory at the same speed of the system bus?? the only reason i ask is because the board manual says it supports up to ddr333 memory, but the BIOS will let me bump the memory up to 400mhz. I'm just trying to get a little more juice out of the computer without spending a whole lot of money. please let me know if i make sense or if i am totally lost. thanks

Reply: (edit)If your motherboard supports dual channel, rather than buy a PC3200 chip why not buy another identical PC2700 chip and run both in dual channel mode. ____________________________ The greatest risk is not taking one

Reply: (edit)I'm not an Intel guy & the quad pumping thing kinda confuses me. This is more of a question than an answer, but it will help me (& hopefully xcphtx) better understand the P4 system 100mhz quad pumped = 400FSB = 3200mb/sec bandwidth. PC3200 is capable of 3200mb/sec throughput, but it has to run at 200mhz to do so, correct? So unless you have a setting to run the RAM at twice the FSB setting of 100mhz, wouldn't getting PC3200 be pointless? However, if the board supports dual channel mode, wouldn't two sticks of PC1600 (running at 100mhz) fulfill the bandwidth requirement necessary for a 'balanced' system? (2 x 1600 = 3200)

Reply: (edit)"I believe the Quad Pumped term is only applicable to P4 processors" I realize that...I believe his question is about a P4 setup?

Reply: (edit)yea he has a P4 and he says he has 748mb of ram, last time i checked they dont sell 748mb sticks so he could already have enough sticks of ram to run in dual channel mode altho i dont know how the hell you could come up with 748mb of ram lol what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other

Reply: (edit)my bad, i meant 768 3 x 256 pc2700 and i don't believe my board supports dual channel, so it still looks like my best bet is to get some 3200 or higher and set the bios to run the memory at 400. i'm also thinking about getting a p4 2.4 ghz cpu, cause that's the highest my board will go, then i'll leave things alone for a while. thanks all

Reply: (edit)or you could just get a better board i mean with the advantages of dual channel mode and with the price of ram compared with the price of motherboards i think you should get a mobo supporting dual channel and keep your 768mb of pc2700 what is painfully obvious to one person might be just painful to the other
