What CPU do you have...2800+ or 3200+?

You only have PC2100 RAM...are you planning on running the CPU at 400mhz & RAM at 266mhz?

If not, go buy some PC3200, then post back...you won't even come close to 400FSB with the RAM you have...

BTW, what bus speeds are you running the CPU & RAM at now?

AMD Athlon 3200+ BArton. I was able to overclock it to 2.4ghz but after a while the games crash. Now i overclocked it to 2.35ghz @400fsb and it seems to be ok. I want to overclock it to 2.5. I can get PC2700 ram very soon. If I have 512 mb of pc2100 and 512 of pc2700 would i be able to overclock it to 2.5ghz?

your cpu overclock is not related to your memory, it is dependant on your vcore and cpu temp.

But your system performance (not your cpu ghz) is being held back because the memory is running at a slow speed. You would be better off with pc3500 or pc3700.

AMD systems perform best when the CPU & RAM are running in sync (both at the same bus speed). To be able to accomplish that, you'd need at least PC3200, & as johnoh suggested, you may wanna go for PC3500 or PC3700.

Your PC2100 is bottlenecking your system. And pairing up PC2700 with PC2100 is no good either...PC2700 isn't fast enough anyway, plus you're limited even moreso by the lower rated RAM (PC2100)

After reading response # 3, I'm a bit confused. Unless you have an early model 3200+, the multiplier is locked at 11x...if you set the FSB to 200mhz (400FSB), you'd be at the default speed of 2200mhz. I don't see how you're arriving at 2350mhz or 2400mhz without either changing the multiplier, or pushing the FSB well above 200mhz?? How are you arriving at these speeds?

2350mhz = 11 x 214mhz ??

2400mhz = 11 X 218mhz ??

And what speed are you running your PC2100 RAM at? 133mhz (266DDR)?

I'm all for overclocking, but why in the hell would even need to overclock a system with those specs. Stop being partner.

games crush my pc now. I went back to 11x200. Im running it at 2.2ghz @400fsb. But i still want to overclock it. I have 512 ddr400 installed and 512 ddr333 installed. Should i remove ddr333 to overclock it succesfully to 220x11?

Yea...temporarily pull the PC2700 (DDR333) & see what you can do...

ill try, but then ill have less ram. You think is better only have 512 of ddr400 than 1gb of both?

That's something you're gonna have to decide. Do you really need 1GB of RAM? Are you running apps (CAD, video/photo editting) that require that much RAM?

If your run the PC2700 & PC3200 together, you won't be able to run the RAM at 400FSB. You're either gonna have to run the CPU at one bus speed (probably 400FSB) & the RAM at another (possibly 350FSB**)...or you'll have to underclock your CPU & run both CPU & RAM at 350FSB**

** this speed is just a guess...you may be able to run higher...you'd have to experiment

i was wrong . My rams & processors fsb was only 266 with my ddr333 ram. When i took ddr333 out my speed bosted up to 435mhz. But is 512 megs enough for games such as far cry???
i ALSO got RADEON 9800 pro videocard

It's more than enough for FarCry. I run the game on high settings with a 2400+, 512Mb PC133 memory and a 9600se. Trying to overclock beyond reality with mix and match components just won't work no matter what the raw numbers of fsb times multiplier say.

It's a way of getting more performance at no or little cost but it's obviously not foolproof. Because of different hardware combinations, strange things can and do happen. Reading some of the other threads on these pages will give you a tour of some pretty weird stuff.

Careful reading of the above responses will explain some of the pitfalls with your particular rig; namely a memory chip that just won't run where you'd like it to.

Only because there is so little difference between a 1ghz machine and a 3ghz machine, assuming all other components are equal.

For games, overclocking your cpu will do squat, however overclocking your video card will produce a noticable difference if you get good results.
