Subject: C&Q, Gainward Bliss 7800GSOS: Windows 2000CPU/Ram: 1.6 GHz/ 2GBModel/Manufacturer: Asus K8V SE Deluxe |
Comment: Hi, I just had to replace my DFI LanParty UT with an Asus K8V SE Deluxe. Does anyone know how to disable Cool&Quiet in the BIOS with a Sempron CPU? I had that processor running at 2800 MHz (350 FSB) on my LanParty, but I cannot do anyting with the K8V, and I was pointed at the C&Q, but I cannot disable it in the BIOS for some reason. I also reinstalled windows, and now my Gainward BLISS 7800 GS AGP (512 Mb) is not very well recognized by the driver. I can get all the resolutiona and color depths I want, but Counter Strike: Source would not work, and possibly some other games will not work either. I know that the chip that's used is actually 7900 GTX (as it has 24 pixel shader units), and I overclocked it to the 7900 GTX levels (GPU, not the VRAM), but now I cannot even use RivaTuner to change the frequencies. Thanks in advance DFI LanParty UT 250 Gb Sempron 2800+@2600 MHz : 2x1Gb Kingston Value RAM DDR400 GainWard GeForce 7800GS AGP 512 Mb GDDR3 WD 320 Gb SATA + Maxtor 250 Gb ATA AOpen 16x DVD-Burner

Reply: (edit)Going from the DFI LanParty UT to the K8V SE Deluxe was quite a downgrade. VIA based boards don't overclock anywhere near as well as nForce based boards. The biggest problem is lack of a PCI/AGP lock. Probably the best you can expect out of it would be a CPU frequency of 225MHz...that would put the CPU at 1.8GHz. C 'n Q is NOT the issue here. With the CPU freq at 350MHz on your DFI board, you would have to set the RAM to DDR200 in the BIOS. It would then run somewhere around 175MHz, which is well underclocked. That kinda defeats the purpose. I doubt you were able to set it at DDR266 because that would put the RAM speed at roughly 233MHz & most DDR400 RAM isn't capable of that. The best settings with DDR400 RAM are CPU at 240-270MHz w/RAM at DDR333 or CPU at 300-335MHz w/RAM at DDR266....that will keep the RAM at roughly 200-225MHz.

Reply: (edit) No, when I try to change the FSB, the multiplier would also drop to approximately give me the 1800 MHz it is rated at. C&Q is teh problem here. I quite frankly do not care about C&Q for any reason, my stock Opteron cooler keeps the CPU well under 50 C anyway.
Also, my RAM was at 5/3, or 240MHz, giving me 210 MHz, so RAM was actually a little overclocked. I also had to change skew values to 10/7 to make the system stable, but I had 18800~ score in 3dmark03... I did not replace the luxury LanParty for no reason, it is just that my options were limited. I don't know if one could help me, but the only problem I have with the LanParty (aside from onboard LAN not working) is that the PS2 port for the keyboard is not working as well. I had to reset the BIOS, and the board now says "CMOS checksum error, default values have been loaded. Please press F1 to continue or Delete to enter setup". But the only way to enter the BIOS or press F1 is if the keyboard responds, but I tried 2, includinng the one I am using, and none worked, so I think it is the PS2 port. Can I enable the USB keyboard support without the BIOS somehow? The mobo is useless as it sits. Reply: (edit)There is no way to lock the PCI/AGP on your VIA based board! At 225MHz, the PCI bus will run at 37.5MHz...that is generally considered to be the safe max. At 250MHz it would run at 41.7MHz, at 300MHz it would run at 50MHz, & at 350MHz it would run at 58.3MHz! BTW, the stock speed of a 2800+ Sempron is 1.6GHz, not 1.8GHz...so it appears that you did overclock it somewhat. But you're not gonna get it substantially higher than that no matter what you do. If overclocking is your goal, you chose the wrong board for it.

Reply: (edit)ok, I realize that i cannot OC my cpu anymore do you have any ideas on what I can do about the DFI lanparty problem I stated? Reply: (edit)Why did you have to reset the BIOS in the 1st place? Do you have a USB keyboard you can try, or did you try one already?

Reply: (edit)I tried my friend's matched pair of 2-2-2-5 550 MHz 512 MB RAM sticks. They failed miserably. Hence the BIOS reset. I tried USB keyboard, I actually have 1 usb and 1 PS2 keyboards connected on my PC rite now.
