i'm trying to decide between an Athlon 64 3000+ (socket 754) and a Sempron 64 3400+ which is the better chip for the money? (the sempron is only $15 more).
I don't know where you're coming up with those prices, but I just had a look at newegg.com & the S64 3400+ Palermo (2.0GHz w/256k L2 cache) sells for $120, the A64 3000+ Venice (2.0GHz w/512k L2 cache) sells for $121.
The A64 is definitely the better of the 2.

Semprons will become the slowest processor preformance wise shortly, seeing as the new Celerons coming out with have 512k L2 cache and the Semprons will continue to run on 256k L2 cache for a while to come.
You are better off getting the S754 Athlon 64 on the Venice core.
