Comment:

my brothers computer is running a rather old p4 1.8ghz (williamite) socket 423 cpu on an asus mobo with 768mb RD ram. i have a few questions:

he has a thermaltake orb on it now, what is the normal running temp for this cpu with this cooler? how hot can it run?

what is the best cooler for a socket 423 cpu?

i know, i should google it first, but i can't seem to find much on socket 423.

thx!

According to the link below your brother's P4 Willamette 1.8GHz has a maximum operating temperature of 78°C.

Is his system overheating and what numbers are being reported with that cooler ?

Wow, socket 423's are quite old. I don't know any 3rd party coolers for that socket... In fact, this is the first time I have came accross this socket. I always thought P4's ran on socket 478 and 775..

Instead of thinking about a new cooler, case temperature and dryed up thermaltake can lead to high temeratures.. Solution, take out the heatsink and scrub away old thermalpaste, add in arctic silver 5 and ensure a good air flow throughout ur case... Pentium 4 has a built-in thermal monitor that when the temperature reach beyond mid and high 70s, it will start to throttle down so if your CPU is not throttle, I would not worry about temperatures...

go to yahoo and search for "throttlewatch"...

ya, i know. it is old, but it runs pretty quick

the bios is reporting around 43 degrees C, and i just didn't know how hot it could get before i worry. i think i found a pretty swell heatsink and fan for it:

swiftech MCX462-U heatsink
vantec 80mm tornado fan

ya, i know, the vantec tornado is ear-peircing, but we don't mind. thx for ur help everyone

you wont mind the tornado for about..a week..and itll start to drive you nuts..try doing as TMP-MAN suggested and pull off the heatsink you have now and replace the thermal paste and clean the heatsink..and by the way..that isn't a terrible cpu temperature by any means
