OS: xp pro
CPU/Ram: 2600barto/1gbpc3200
Comment:

i have an AMD XP 2600+ Barton w/ 333fsb & 512 L2 cache. it runs at about 1.917 ghz and its not overclocked.

i also purchased a VOLCANO 9 heatsink with has adjustable fan speeds from 1400-5000 rpm.

at idle my cpu is at aboue 43c with the fan speed around 2700 rpm. at full load while playing a game like UT2003 it goes around
45-48c with the same rpm.

i know bartons run hotter than tbreds, so is this a good temp with a volcano 9?? i also have 1 other case fan that came with my case, and the wire management is ok.

also, why do bartons run hotter than tbreds?

As long as you LIKE the temps, who cares. The system is running okay, right?

May be the additional 256 cache makes the difference in higher temp, don't you? Or, may be I am wrong because 8 cylinders engine may not run twice as hot as a 4 cylinders. Why don't you tell me?

I don't own a Barton or Tbred, but the "typical" heat dissipation of the Barton 2500+ through 2800+ models is less than the Tbred 2400+ as stated by AMD. Additionally, at least one system integrator has decided to put a Barton 2500+ in a small "book" case system, instead of other less expensive, readily available socket A CPUs. My guess is that if the 2400+ ran significantly cooler, this SFF system would have included a 2400+ instead of a 2500+. This assumes normal operating conditions (i.e., not overclocking).

Have you actually observed Bartons running hotter than Tbreds, at similar clock speeds?
