I just noticed my 2GHz processor was running at 1.2Ghz approx(per windows system properties) I changed the default bus setting on the MSI board from 100 to 133 and this then gave me a speed of 1.6Ghz approx. I went back and changed the bus to 166, but the machine just powered down and has refused to power up again...totally dead...nothing happens when I hit the power switch. Any ideas on how to get it back running

And why did you change it to 166?
Unplug and remove the cmos battery for about 15 seconds. Put the battery back in and plug in power cord. Start computer and hold delete key down until you reach bios screen. When in bios reset your FSB to 133, then save and exit. It's best to start reading up on things before you start jacking around with them. JMO.

To get your system up & running again, clear CMOS (reset the BIOS) by removing the battery from the motherboard. Make sure to unplug the power cord 1st, then remove the battery for a few minutes. Your BIOS will then reset to all the default values....then when you bootup, get into the BIOS & change the settings as necessary for your particular hardware configuration.

As for your CPU speed...Athlon XP's are performance rated. The 2000+ actually runs at 1667mhz...12.5 x 133mhz. If the multiplier on your CPU is unlocked, & your board & RAM support 166mhz(333FSB), you could run the CPU at 10.0 x 166mhz. It would still be at 1667mhz, but your overall system performance should increase due to the faster FSB

XP2000+ is NOT! a 2Ghz processor, it is a 1.67Ghz factory clockspeed processor. Although you can overclock it to run faster than 1.67Ghz by using a clock higher than its default 133Mhz.

Like the above posts implied reset the clock to 133Mhz and let it run at the factory clockspeed, unless you now want to overclock it.

Thanks guys...I got it running again by removing the battery. The processor is actually a XP2600+ (2.087Ghz)333Mhz, and it still only runs at 1.67Ghz with bus set at 133Mhz. Any thoughts

Yeah! it is going to run @ 1.67Ghz if you set the clock @ 133Mhz, you need to set the clock @ 166Mhz to run @ 2083MHz (166x12.5).

I hope you have 2700 ram or higher.

You should have been clearer about what you had to begin with...it would have saved a lot of grief. OK, so you have a 2600+/333FSB...is it a Tbred or a Barton?

2600+ Tbred = 12.5 x 166mhz @ 1.65v
2600+ Barton = 11.5 x 166mhz @ 1.65v

But as YO pointed out, you'll need PC2700 RAM to pull off the 166mhz/333FSB setting

Apologies for not having the correct info to begin with, but with the PC not working at home, I was posting the message from work, and going from memory. My RAM is PC2100 so I guess that's what caused the malfunction last time I changed to 166Mhz FSB. I'll have to put up with the slower speed till I feel like splashing out on new ram. Would the difference be noticable ?

You betcha. You get the extra 400Mhz and the faster memory will be running at the same speed (166Mhz) as the processor...just like it was intended.
