OS: Windows 2000
CPU/Ram: AMD Athlong XP2800+
Comment:

Hi, I got an AMD Athlon XP2800+ a month or two ago and have installed it and everything seems to be working fine. However, when I run Soldier of Fortune 2 at the beginning it runs through my machine configuration and says "CPU: Athlong running at 1124Mhz" or something similar. I'm not sure on the exact MHz it says but it's around that number.
So I'm wondering, does that mean I haven't installed it properly? Shouldn't it be running at 2800MHz?

In case it's important, I'm running it on a Gigabyte K7 Triton motherboard, with 400 FSB.

This is my first non-Mac computer, so I've no idea if it's running slow or not! SoF2 runs fine, and Far Cry is tolerable at lower res.

Any ideas?
Thanks!
CasperTG

Your athlon should be running at 2083 mhz by default, check the fsb settings that should be set to 166 in the bios.

Thanks, I checked the FSB setting in the BIOS and it was at 100Mhz. I changed it to 166 (And it said resulting FSB is 400MHz).

However, SoF2 still says I'm running at 1224MHz, as does HARDiNFO (a diagnostic tool that gives stats on all system components).

Any other ideas?

Something's not right...

"I changed it to 166 (And it said resulting FSB is 400MHz)"

166 should make the FSB 333mhz. I don't know how you'd arrive at 1224mhz with a 100mhz setting...or even a 133 or 166 setting for that matter.

What motherboard do you have & what CPU...Barton or Tbred? The Barton is supposed to run at 2083mhz (12.5 x 166)...the Tbred runs at 2250mhz (13.5 x 166)

Download CPUZ...it will tell you exactly what CPU you have & what the clock settings are, then post back with the results:

have you checked the FSB jumper setting on the motherboard are correct, if indeed they have them?

Woohoo! I've made some progress!!

Before, CPUZ said this:
Name AMD Athlon XP
Code Name Barton
Specification AMD Athlon(tm)
Family / Model / Stepping 6 A 0
Extended Family / Model 7 A
Package Socket A
Technology 0.13 µ
Supported Instructions Sets MMX, Extended MMX, 3DNow!, Extended 3DNow!, SSE
CPU Clock Speed 1243.3 MHz
Clock multiplier x 12.5
Front Side Bus Frequency 99.5 MHz
Bus Speed 198.9 MHz

Then I saw nealwainwright's post about checking jumper setting on my motherboard. Well I looked on the diagram but couldn't see anything about jumpers or anything, but saw "CPU Clock switch" had a look and it has an "off" and "auto" setting. I flicked it from 'off' to auto and started up.

Now CPUZ says this:
CPU Clock Speed 2079.6 MHz
Clock multiplier x 12.5
Front Side Bus Frequency 166.4 MHz
Bus Speed 332.7 MHz

Woohoo! Thankyou all for your help!
Now my question is:
Only 2080Mhz? Shouldn't it go up to 2800MHz normally? I don't want to overclock or anything funky like that, just curious why it's 2079.6 and not 2800, like I'd have thought an Athlon 2800+ would do!

As for what m/b I have, cpuz says this:
Motherboard manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Motherboard model: nVidia-nForce2, 1.x
BIOS vendor: Award Software International, Inc.BIOS revision: F1
BIOS release date: 07/04/2003
Chipset: nVidia nForce2 400 rev. C1
Southbridge: nVidia nForce2 MCP rev. A4

[Although I updated the BIOS just after I ran cpuz]

Thanks again to everyone, now to see what difference it makes!!! :D

the 2800+ does not mean it runs at 2.8ghz its basically a way of comparing itself to intel cpus as they have a higher clock speed but this doesnt translate into better performance, its not all about mhzs these days, the cpu you have is the one i have the 2800+ barton which alhtough only runs a tad under 2.1 ghz is better than the 2800+ thoroughbred which runs at around 2.2 ghz due to the fact that the barton has twice the level 2 cache memory, in theory your cpu should be as good as a 2.8 ghz pentium, but it doesnt always work out like that!

I posted the proper speed earlier:

"The Barton is supposed to run at 2083mhz (12.5 x 166)..."

It appears your board runs the FSB slightly underspeed. Although it's referred to as 166, it really runs at 166.6667mhz (or it's supposed to anyway). Your's is running just slightly under at 166.4mhz.

Gald to hear you got it sorted out...now let's talk about overclocking it...LOL
