OS: Windows XP w/SP2
CPU/Ram: (What should be an) AMD A

Okay, here's my problem. When I first got my mobo/CPU combo, it booted up saying it was only running at 1.25GHz. So I changed the FSB to what I thought it was was supposed to be, from 100MHz to 166MHz. Saved, exited BIOS, wouldn't load Windows. It would just keep restarting right before the Windows XP load screen.I used to be able to go to 158MHz FSB with stock heatsink fan. I upgraded that to an "Arctic Cooling CPU Cooler For AMD Athlon Socket 462 up to 3400+, Model "Copper Silent 2M" -RETAIL" (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=35-186-105&depa=0)
so that helped raise FSB a little bit more. Right now the FSB is set to 161MHz and it's rated at 2.01GHz which is still way to far off. My CPU isn't a Barton, it's a Throughbred, for the record. My specs are this (the useful ones):
(What should be a) AMD Athlon XP 2600+ Throughbred
512MB Kingston HyperX DDR PC2700 RAM
The new CPU cooler
PC Chips M848A Rev. 2.1 mobo
If you need anything else, let me knows. Thanks in advance for the replies I may or may not get.

Rebooting is sometimes caused by a weak PSU. What the wattage & how many amps on the +12v rail? What's the CPU voltage set at? What's your CPU temp?

Make sure your multiplier is set to 12.5x, your FSB to 166MHz, set the CPU:DRAM ratio at 1:1, check that the CPU voltage is correct (1.65v), Spread Spectrum should be disabled. Don't tweak the RAM timings...go with the defaults, don't use agressive settings.

It appears to me that you have an Anthlon 2600XP AXDA2600DKV3C that should have a clock speed of 2133Mhz. Set your FSB to 133Mhz and your multiplier will be set to 16X automatically so you don't have to mess around with that. You should be good to go.

Sorry. I've been trying to work this out. My PS is a 500W PS. Vcore is at 1.62V. Multiplier's are locked with this mobo. All I can change is FSB. Don't have the money to buy a new mobo at the moment... Or any time within the next 4 months for that matter. Oh, and my temps are around 35-37C. Any other suggestions?

Oh, I forgot too mention I've tried several different power supplies with the same results. Maybe the mobo is just limiting voltage?

Hey YO,

If the multiplier is locked (which I had asumed it was) & the CPU was intially recognized as 1.25GHz with the FSB at 100MHz, the multi is obviously 12.5x...that would mean he has the 333FSB version of the 2600+.

ConfusedComputerGuy,

Once you change the FSB to 166MHz, can you access the BIOS again on the next reboot? Can you surf around the BIOS at 166MHz without the rebooting?

Your CPU voltage is a little low. I don't know if it's actually 1.62v, or it's just being reported as such. It wouldn't hurt to take it up to 1.70v & see if that helps. Did you try YO's suggestion to set the FSB at 133MHz? It won't get you to the proper speed, but I'm curious if it will bootup & run with that setting. Other than that, it could be a RAM problem...check the voltage setting.

Test the RAM with the FSB set to 166MHz. Use memtest86 & let it run for at least one complete series:

Jam,

You're probably right. You know, he could at least get the multiplier value from the bios for us. Geez! I'm through with this thread.

Hey! Wait a minute Confused. What video card are you using? Is it an ATI? Did you let windows install the driver? Bill Gates ought to be ashamed. He wouldn't know a good driver if it hit on the side of his head. lol!

Sorry again. I tried to flash BIOS and something went wrong so I now I need a whole new mobo anyways. I'll wait 'til I get that to see what's going on. But on my old one my multiplier was set at 12.5MHz. Yes it was locked. No I couldn't change voltages in it. I have a friggen 6 year old nVidia TNT Model 64/Model 64 Pro video card that I'm about to replace within the next month or so. I was able to take my FSB and it was able to reboot and I could get back into BIOS but it rebooted itself either right as Windows was about to load or before it even started. So like I said, I'm going to wait 'til I get my new mobo since it has voltage adjusting options and such. The new mobo? It's an ABIT "NF7-S" nForce2 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-127-166&depa=1) so I'll be able to adjust almost everything. I'll let everyone know how it goes once I eventually recieve it. (Have to work up a few more dollars). Thanks for the help so far though. Continue posting just in case anyone else has this problem. :]

Oh, I forgot to mention the letters/numbers on the processor itself. They are AXDA2600DKV3D. Just figured I would post that and clear that up considering I had to take my mobo and crap out/apart anyways.

Can you explain how you attempted the flash & what went wrong? It may still be save-able

Well, I booted up with a Win98 boot floppy, typed in everything in the DOS commands like I've done before and in the middle of it loading the new BIOS, BAM! One of those quick power surge things and everything gets shut off in my house for a split second... Just enough time to shut my computer off in the middle of the BIOS flashing. That's why I think I need a new mobo... Oh, and I've already attempted clearing CMOS, several times actually. Powers up but doesn't post at all. Just a black screen. Nothing shorted out or anything, I tested all the parts in our other computer to make sure and even took the parts in that one and put them in mine and still doesn't boot so I'm almost 100% positive BIOS is screwed and I need a new mobo.

Update: Decided on a new motherboard after shopping around a bit more. The new motherbaord is an EPoX EP-8RDA3IPRO (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-123-234&depa=1). It has all the overclocking features I want in a new motherboard and then some. :]
