I want to overclock my athlon xp 2600. i have an valcona 11 for a hsf fan combo, all copper. i have been reading up a little and checking other peoples post to see if i found the info i needed first before posting this message. i know i can increase the fsb, but it wont let me go higher than 168 without having errors. so i take it i need to change the v-core. my question is how and by how much do i change this. i have a msi kt4vl motherboard. so i think its pretty descent. i just want to see moderate gains in speed, so i can learn this process. please help, thanks happy holidays

btw in the bios it allows me to change the vcore from auto to settings of 1.675, 1.70,1.75,1.80,1.85 which setting should i try and when i change the vcore what would i want to set my fsb to? thanx for the help

I could "almost" bet you a buck that your problem is memory setting when you can't even increase your FSB by 2 mhz from default.
Set your memory timming to 3-4-4-8 and see what'd happen.

the settings in my bios that it will let me change unless im looking in the wrong place our as follows
speed spectron ---set at =.25
fsb---set at 170
cpu ratio--auto
cpu vcore-auto max settings is 1.8
ddr voltage- set at auto
termination voltage--set at auto
agp vol.---set at auto
please help what are the optimum settings. and as far as the memory timmings go, i went to the spot in bios i believe to be for memory and the spd is set to auto if you change it to user there are a bunch of options. the first on can be set to three like you said but the next couple of question are all answers like 4t or 5t and there is also a section for speed burst and that is set to normal should i change it to super fast?

I am sorry for just saying set the voltage to 2.7 I should have sait set the ram voltage.
Here is my system (I got this high in small steps do not try and set urs like this all at once)
K7n2 2500+locked at 11x pc2100 Tt11heat sink
chipset cooler and fx5200 video.
My fsb is set 400mh (200in bios)and ram is running at 333 2 2 2 2 my cpu is at 1.6v and my ram is at 2.7v my system became 100% stable when I set the ram at 2.7v

hey Rob,
When you say not to jump to that setting but to do it incrementally Do you say this:
1) Simply because one can do damage by going too far over a safe level for their system (I already know the answer to this is yes)
AND/OR
2) because somehow the system needs to grow...I mean for example, If i knew magically that your setting would be the highest performing setting for me, and somehow i also magically knew it would be safe and stabe, is there any reason I would still need to increase incrementally?--Is there a potential for damage if i don't?
Thanks,
-C

Well my 2500+ is 11x ur 2600+ is 11.5 so it should work! I say do not go up all at once so it does not break and have someone all mad. I never would set my front side bus 400 because someone said it would work! I would start at default speed and work in small gains. U have to make sure ur memory is going to work at the rite speed I think I set mine 6-5 ratio so it runs at 333 (166). If u have pc2700 auto would make it run at 333. pc3200 would be best at 400 Also the ddr voltage is ur ram and default is 2.5 I would set it to 2.7.
I have had my FSB up 440 using the nvidia overclock tool the ram ran around 373 thats when it became unstable I think it was more of a ram issue then a cpu I only have pc2100.
