have my new Athlon XP 2000+ ( Palomino :( Not
Thorougbred ) installed. I am using a HEC 6AU6 casing with two 120mm
fans installed. My motherboard is ABIT NF7. My Athlon XP is installed
with a stock fan. My XP is as high as 70-73 when idle, shooting up to 77-80 when working 100%. I don't believe my casing doesn't have enough airflow
as two large HEC fans are both working, and the heatsink is hot so I
believe it does have a good contact with the Athlon XP Die. The stock
fan works fine, running at around 4600 RPM. My room temperature is about 28. Why is my newly installed Athlon
XP's temperature is so high? Could it because of defective CPU? The
voltage is set at 1.75V, which is the XP 2000+ (Palomino) required voltage... Help
me please... (My friend's XP is only 55 when idle)

Man! If you're running 77-80c temps, you need to turn off your machine NOW to avoid the risk of CPU damage. MAXIMUM die temperature is 90c!

Check to ensure that the heatsink/fan you're using is rated to cool that speed CPU. You may also want to CAREFULLY check to make sure that the heatsink is properly mounted on the CPU. Clean off the thermal compound, and sparingly reapply a paper-thin layer before reseating your heatsink.

The fan I am using is come with box. It is a stock heatsink/fan. I am wondering why it is SOOOO HOT (REALLY HOT). Any idea? I don't intend to buy any new or branded HSF. Will application of thermal paste help? If it does, how will the result be when I apply the thermal paste on it?

Try generic thermal paste. If you don't see your temps fall below 60C, spend $16 on PriceWatch and get a Volcano 7.

Good temps from this CPU are 40-50C. I've run one at 81C without damaging it but this was an accident and I would avoid doing it!

Exchange it for a green Athlon XP, put a drop of thermal paste between the core & heatsink, and get an Antec power supply 350 Watts or higher. I guarantee the temps will go down BELOW 50C Idle.
I had many overheating problems with the brown Athlon XP's and weak power supplies...

I have replaced the stock HSF with this new Volcano 7+... Running at full speed, it onlys cool the processor down to 54 when idle, 60 when fullload. But I wont run it any fullspeed anyway. I probably run it at medium speed. Idle 57, 100% used up 65-67. I still feel that this XP generate way too lot of heat. I have tried to remove all of the old thermalplastic pad and re-applied a new thin layer of thermal grease. I still couldn't understand why I cant get the temp. like what you all get. 40-50. It nearly drives me crazy. My system temp is 29-32. What is/are the problem/problems? I would like to know if I can ask for exchange of the processor with the reason that it generates a lot of heat. I still have warranty... newly bought that's why. 3 Years... Any ideas on how can I ask for a new processor... Help...

I have the same chip and fan, my idle temp is around 50 or less. What thermal compound are you using? I would suggest getting a silver thermal paste from Antec or something.

i jsut bought athlon xp 2000+ with asus a7n8x the mobo with Qfan, and it controls the fan speed to ensure, CPU wont heat up, so far its good Kyo, only drawback is that it's idle is 55 degrees and 60 degrees wit fulload. Also im using the retail fan, which is quiet for an AMD, and i have a Thermaltake Super Orb, do you guys think i can use the super orb to support the CPU?

Your temp probe could be off. Your case might not have enough ventillation.

If things are stable, I'd leave it alone before you break soemthing.

well i fixed the problem, and Kyo this would help u too, just take a cpu fan off a heatsink like a cheap one i used a volcano 6 which runs at 7600 RPM, then being creative that i am, put it rite on top of the cpu fan, by doin this i lowered the temperature by 13 degrees C
