my new pc creases after being on for more than a few hours. if i then restart straight away it crashes almost immediately again. i'm thinking that the cpu is overheating but my temp monitor says case avg. 40C and cpu at 49C (with case off)- i'm pretty sure it's crashing when at 50C. i thought this was in the normal temp range of athlon 2000+. any suggestions?

Your temp is OK. It’s crashing for other reasons.

Might try changing RAM. Check Mobo manufacturers sight for the approved RAM.
