Hi.
Please tell me what is the Pentium 4 and Athlon 3000+ (Barton) designed for.
and simply...which one is the best and why!
thanks

Which one is best is dependent on two main factors:
1. What the machine is to be used for;
2. Personal preference.I personally prefer to use Athlon CPU's, but acknowledge that many people prefer Pentiums. Expect many of your replies to be biased due to personal preference.

athlon 3000+ is way better than p4
go read some reviews online
the only thing good about p4 is they got more L2 cache than amd athlon.
AMD only got 256kb of L2 cache and P4 got 512k L2 cache
and why amd athlon xp 3000+ is much better than p4? because amd put more pipeline into the processor allowing the processor to look ahead but only thing with amd processors is they generate more heat than p4, so you just gotta be careful.P4 is designed more for those people who want to get a real processor...and the price they can afford..mostly for business people, less for gamers because the cost factor
AMD on the other hand, it cost way less, and you can pay the less price for the higher performance, which one would you go for?

I thought the 3000+ had more cache than the P4's from the reviews I've read, they all say the 3000+ has more cache than the P4. I also don't find AMDs are warmer, my friends w/ p4s say theirs run at 50-60 deg on idle, mine runs at 40

First, I am on AMD side...
AMD cpu's have always been faster then Intel cup’s, until the 3.06 Ghz came out. The P4 3.06 is a little faster then the 3000+. The difference is not noticeable though.
So if you do want to buy the best cpu go with the Athlon 3000+ to save a couple hundred dollers.
I don't see the point in buying either of though cpu’s. I would wait tell AMD lays down the hammer. I think the hammer is 3600+ (correct me if I’m wrong). If you need a knew cpu I would go with the Athlon 2800+ and save up for the hammer. I'm still satisfied with my Athlon 1600.
AMD RULES!!!

The 3000+ (Barton Core) has 512KB L2 cache, just like the P4.
The Athlon however, has mor L1 cache than the P4, so yes the Athlon has more cache total than the P4. Does cache matter, well i doubt you'll tell the difference in real world preformance, save this for the benchmarking.
Which one is better??? I think you need to make this decesion on your own. I don't want to be bias and say the P4 is better than the Athlon or visa versa. I can say, the preformance is similiar, some applications run faster on the Athlon, while others run faster on the P4. It really comes down to what Sci-Guy said "personal preference". Go find some benchmarks, do a google on "AMD Athlon 3000+ review." You'll find loads of reviews comparing the Athlon with the P4. Good Luck

Tests show that the barton looses in most serios mathematical applications like video coding and stuff.
The Barton beats the pentium in games and 3D mark, but its only by a very small amount. The pentium is better but its also that much more expensive. YOu get what you pay for.

But what would you rather tell your friends?
"I have 2.15 GHz" or "I have 3.06 GHz"
P4 owns XP+ ;)

Of course you will see the difference in speed on a processor with more cache, since L1 cache is fastest of all means the more L1 cache the processor has less time will be spent by the processor accessing L2 cache, similarly the more L2 cache the processor possesses the less time the processor will spend accessing data from Main memory which is slower still, Just like the more main memory you have the less time your processor will spend accessing your hard disk for even slower data..
As for the earlier submission, 3 or 4 I think, what is the point of taking the temperature when your processor is IDLE and not doing any qork, the processor gives off much much much much much more heat when working anyway, taking your temperature when the processor is spending most its time idling is a waste of time.
As for the best processor, I suppose the best to go for is the processor you feel more comfortable spending your money on, and of course what other equipment you want to use in your PC, i.e. AMD's dont like to work all that well with some graphics card chipsets, best sticking to the Geforce chipsets..
I am an AMD user and will be for the forseeable future, but I have friends who use P4's and have no problems at all. Most of the problems with any PC system are due to the user.......

some people are not seeing the big picture here...an xp 3000+ runs at 2.16 ghz..the P4 3.06 runs at 3.06 ghz...the AMD is pretty damn close to P4 performance at 900 mhz less...in other words, AMD is doing close to the same with less speed....i myself opted for the 2500+ which can be overclocked to over 2 ghz
