Hey,

I've got an Asus A7n8x deluxe w/ an Athlon XP 2700+, 2 512 MB sticks of Samsung ddr400 memory. Haven't installed the os yet. Here's the problem: In the bios, i set the external cpu freq to 166 MHz (half of fsb, as stated in manual), core voltage to 1.65V, memory freq is auto detected at 200 MHz (also tried 166, to match FSB), using optimal (automatic) timings for the ram, the multiplier is set automatically at 12.5/13.0X (I tried 13.0 alone, which is the correct value, and it didn't work) and i keep getting one error:
Warning!! CPU have over speed
What could cause this? I followed everything in the manual, and many settings are automatic. The CPU seems relatively comfortable at 44-45 degrees centigrade. It works occaisionally if i bump up the core voltage to 1.675V, but i shouldn't have to do that, right? Basically, i'm just trying to use the default settings for the processor. Could it be a defective logic board or cpu? I'm afraid it might be, because no one else seems to have this problem, and the asus manual doesn't even mention this error. Is there a way to test for either without buying another board/processor? Thanks for all your help.

Okay, gut it running long enough to install xp pro w/ sp1. It booted fine the first two times - but now it just hangs at boot up trying to boot from the cd-rom. If i put in the xp cd to repair the installation, I can set the new installation as the default installation. Then it'll work (sometimes) but after 1 or 2 times, refuses to boot again. Has anyone seen this before?

You need to set your FSB to 166 and leave everything else on auto for now. Your cpu frq should be 133.

Let me know how this works out.

BTW please telll me your temps in the BIOS because I have the exact same config and I want to know if mey temps are average.

My temp is 50 degrees C

But the fsb of the cpu is 333, so the external freq should be 166, right? If I leave it idle for a while, the temb in bios hovers around 46 Centigrade, with no overclocking.

Okay, more problems:
the rear USB 2.0 jacks work fine, and windows detects all ports as USB 2.0, but when i connect a usb hard drive to the front usb ports (USB 5 and 6 on the main logic board), windows reports that 'a high speed device is connected to a low speed port.' Near as i can tell, i matched all of the pins and connectors from the case properly (I have an Antec Performance Plus 1080B case). Could it be the actual jacks themselves? Any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks!

Jayce,

I have the same setup, except, I m running Corsair ddr433 ram. It seems that many boards were shipped with a bad battery. I had a very similar problem with mine (caused by the weak battery). This might be the cause your of problem. The battery is a CR2032 3V, it can be found just about anywhere watch batteries are found. One more thing that you might check is that your jumper on the motherboard is set to 333 not 266. I hope this helps... Good luck.

First off all, maybe you should update your A7n8x BIOS I am using a 1700+ on the board so I don't have this type of problem. AND yes your CPU is 333 FSB so you must set it to 166. 166 x 2 = 332. Set everything else as optimal and just default recommended. It is possible that the RAM has problems because Asus has problem with 333 Pc 2700 RAM, yours is 400 doesn't mean that the same problem doesn't appear.

If You goto www.asus.com.tw you will be able to find the newest BIOS which is 1002. In the past 2-3 BIOS asus had been working on the DDR333 ram stability. There is also some work with Dual Channel, it seemed to be.

http://www.asus.com/support/download/item.aspx?ModelName=A7N8X%20Deluxe

By the way maybe you should try to turn on and off your Dual Channel DDR support to see which is more stable.

For the USB problem your computer should be running USB2. Not the normal USB by installing the first service pack of XP they will automatically install the drivers for USB2 support. But it seemed like the problem persists so maybe you should try installing the stock driver from the CD. Remember you must have SP1 in order to receive USB2 support. Now again the BIOS has some fixes that deals with USB problems. Maybe it could solve it.

I don't even know if I'm running USB2 or not ;/

Maybe you are running a USB2.0 drive on a USB1.1 port?

That's what I assumed at first, but according to the board manual and windows xp, it's on a 2.0 root hub. Does the actual hardware matter? I mean, the physical jack? I'd researched it for a while, and near as i could tell, the jack itself was never an issue - it was always the firmware of the interface and you had to make sure that the wire could handle the increased data flow. Is this assumption incorrect?

Hi Guys

I just finished today building a new pc.
I have the Asus a7n8x deluxe, 512mb Corsair x 1, AMD XP 2400+, Ati radeon 9500 pro.

When I turn it on, its comes up with "Warning CPU have over speed", and turns it self off. You can get into bios but only for a few seconds before the machine turns off. When you push the power stitch again, its does not even come up on screen, and turns its self off after a few seconds. To get to see the message again, you have to turn the power supply switch off at the back for a few seconds. and try again. does anyone have any idea's. I cant even get to install anything. All settings are on default.

Thanks Durgesh

Having bad problems with it too. The most I get now is "NO CPU, NO CPU, NO CPU..." when I turn it on with no cpu in it. Once there is one, there is nothing. I know that the cpu, ram and graphics card are all ok as they work fine in a mates computer. As with the PSU. It did work for a while but kept hanging every so often. Then after installing xp, we tried to get the fsb and memory set up correctly in the bios. Nothing seems to fix it. Time to send it back:O(

Also has anyone else seen the bios logo screen appear just before windows starts but after the post, but looking very corrupted. I'm sure it shouldn't do this. Again:O(

i think they had a batch of bad boards - i had the same error as durgesh when i first hooked it all up (warning - CPU have over speed) - and usb didn't work properly, and once it even zapped itself on its own, reset and the bios was at default... now, it won't even boot. It'll turn on, but no post. I don't even know what to do now - i think my board is just all jacked up.
