Comment: Hi everyone. I just had a custom computer built a lil while back and Im having some heating issues I believe. My system is Athlon xp 2100 Asus A7V333 Motherboard (thats all u really needa know for my problem) anyways im noticing major slowdownat times, so i rest my computer and it says that theres an error in the hardware monitor and wont start. i look and my motherboards at 42C and my processor numbers are in red at 77C I think my processor is too hot os i tried rmeoving side and that did nothin. So I just bought a new volcanoe 9 heatsink. I think this will solve my problem, but I have no idea on how to take the old heatsink off, and nmo idea how to put the new one one... Ideas anyone?

Reply: (edit)How long have you had this PC? Did you have this problem right from the start? If not, did you make any changes about the time this began? If your temp readings are accurate, there's something wrong...& I doubt a new HSF is gonna solve the problem. Maybe it's inadequate case cooling...or maybe your current HSF isn't seated properly on the CPU core.

Reply: (edit)you remove the old heatsink by unclipping it very carefully. Make sure you don't damage the cpu. Scrape off the thermal pad on the new heatsink if it has one. Then put a drop of a thermal compound, put the heatsink on it properly and then clip it down, hook up the wires and try her out.

Reply: (edit)You might also want to improve the airflow circulation also by adding an exhaust fan to the slots in the back. Just hook it up to one of the power supply cables. If you have none left in the PC buy a Y power supply cable.

Reply: (edit)I still say you've got a problem. I doubt a new heatsink fan is gonna lower your temps by 30C....you should average about 50C.

Reply: (edit)Use goo-gone to remove the old thermal compound from both CPU and heatsink. You can get it at most hardware stores. Merely scraping it off won't do much good. Then use Artic Silver to reapply a very thin coat to the cpu core (it should only be enough to get a very thin layer to cover the entire surface of the core), using a credit card or razor blade to spread it evenly over the die (you don't need any compound anywhere else on the cpu). Then put on a latex glove and use your fingertip to rub in a little compound on the bottom of the heatsink, then use a lint-free cloth to wipe off as much of the compound as you can from the heatsink (you're just trying to fill in the microscopic pits and valleys). You should try to get the heatsink and cpu installed before 5 minutes has expired.

Reply: (edit)If your using software like "Motherboard Monitor" you can adjust the temperature settings for when your pc should shut off...I've built a few Xp2100's and they do run hot..I've found that the fan and glue in the boxed cpu's is crap...especially above xp2100's and they run red hot...to remove the cpu and fan, switch off the power and unplug all leads..use a long thin screwdriver and unclip the spring clip which goes from one side of the heat sink to the other..Make sure your pushing down then out as you may break the clip on the motherboard..Unclip the whole cpu (don't touch the little contacts..static) or wiggle the heatsink to break it away from the cpu..the cpu should have 4 little round pads in each corner to rest the heatsink..clean up old past with cloth..make sure you don't put too much thermal paste on the face of the cpu (the little square in the middle) and scrape off any on the heatsink... Use your finger..Note the paste is sticky as.. and replace back into cpu slot...refit everything in reverse..Note some motherboard temperature sensors aren't that accurate and your system might not really be reading the correct temperature.. good luck..lol
