Hi All
I am new to your forum & hope you can help me out.
I have a machine with the above board in it. I have put on the latest BIOS (beta version) and I have a AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2600+ CPU. (which should over clock nicely )
At the moment I have the CPU running @ 1.96ghz (14 * 140fsb), in jumper mode at 1.52 volts. (set the dip switches manually, although have tried in jumper free mode as well with the same results)
I don't understand why I can’t overclock the multiplier. If I set the multiplier greater than 14 the PC will boot but CPUZ & Windows reports it still at a 14 clock (e.g. 1.96Ghz). I have tried the multiplier at 15, 15.5, 16, 16.5 & 17 all with the same results. I’m reluctant to go any higher in case I cook the CPU.
Also, how high can I over clock the FSB on this board?
Can any one help, have you had this before?

Here are the specs on your mobo.

Looks like you have two bottle necks. The ram and the mobo are going to hold your 2600 mobile back quite a bit.
What ram are you trying to use and how high does your FSB go? Did the bios update allow you to up the FSB? If so, how high can you go?

HI YOYO
Thanks for the reply.
I knew it would to be honest, I just wanted to get the fastest CPU before they were phased out and no longer available.
The FSB in jumper mode supports upto 140 x 2 (280FSB) but in the jumperfree mode you can go up to 217 x 2. The RAM is PC2100, so I am pretty sure it is on its limits.
I was hoping to over clock the CPU as I have seen others oevrclock there mobile's 2600+ to 2.2ghz. I just dont nuderstand why it wont multiply correctly.

Paul,
If you have a friend who happens to have a stick of it, try it before you buy. Please let me know if it works as I have 2/a7a266 mobos and might just throw a mobile into one of them. Just curious, what ram settings show in your bios? Thanks!
YO

Hi yo,
Surely the RAM would only effect the FSB and not the multilper on the CPU????
RAM setting in Windows Cpuz are 1:1,2.5,3,3,6.
If you give me your email addres I can e-mail them to you.

Paul,
Just post back to this post. I will save it as a favorite place and check it to see if you respond back.
Thanks!

OK, you should be running Beta BIOS 1015.002
Here are your jumper setting...make sure you're in "jumper free" mode for both the FSB & multiplier:
http://usa.asus.com/products/mb/socketa/a7v266-e/jumper.htm
You "may" have to increase your vcore, but I'd hold on that for the time being...looks like your next jumper step after the default is 1.675v. But the manual also shows vcore adjustment in the BIOS?
I believe your max multiplier setting should be 12.5x...I don't know how you're getting to 14x unless it's in the Beta BIOS?
Set the CPU Speed to MANUAL & when choosing a System/PCI setting, don't let the PCI speed go above 38MHz...that'll happen at about 150MHz. I don't know what settings you have in the System/SDRAM Frequency Ratio, but your PC2100 is gonna hold you back from running 1:1 at 150MHz. You may have to run ASYNC with CPU at 150MHZ & RAM at 133MHz, if that's possible.
Overclocking via the multiplier won't add all that much performance. Increasing the FSB is where you're find the most benefit.
Ideally, you should get an overclockable nForce2 board & PC3200 if you really wanna take advantage of the XP-M's potential

Before you get a new board, the multiplier of your Athlon XP is surely locked by AMD so you can't just change it. There might be ways around that lock but it's not as easy as with the Athlon Thunderbird. I don't own an Athlon XP so I can't help you there!

Hi
Worked this out a last.
The motherboard had the PLAO_FREQ (FID0/1/2/3) set to the PALOMINO setting and not the Athlon setting. I changed this and it picked the CPU settings up fine.
I am playing with the speed on the board, 16.5 x 140fsb (1.56volts) giving 2.31ghz. Will have to keep an eye on it to make sure im not running it too hot, but so far it seems ok (40C).
I have use the wire trick to unlock the board, which offers me 14/24 on the clock speed (http://img49.exs.cx/img49/8428/13multi2.jpg ) and I am running the BIOS you mention.
Thanks for all your help, great forum, will def use again....!!
