Hi, Please can I have your advise. I have the following setup

Asus A7N8X Deluxe V2 Mobo
Bios rev 1008
AMD Athlon XP 3200 (w/400fsb)
2 x 512Mb Corsair PC3200(400) DDR Slots 1&3
Geforce4 MX440SE
Enermax ATX-E Power supply
1 x Maxtor 80Mb HDD
1 x Maxtor 120Mb HDD
1 x Samsung CD/RW DVD
1 x Sony DVD/RW
1 x ProII Multi Card Reader

I recently installed the Xp 3200 but just cannot get the system working at 400Mhz FSB. I have checked the pins, the heatsync, the memory. can anyone advise why the above spec just won't work at 400FSB? The system runs very stable at 333Mhz which confuses me.

When I switch the bios to 200 x 11.0 the system won't completely post or attempt to boot from operating system. I'm a bit lost to be honest, could it be anything to do with the GeForce MX440?

The Athlon XP 3000+ runs with a 333Mhz FSB!

You've been inadvertently overclocking :P

Hi Zee,

As stated the proc is an AMD Athlon 3200+ (not 3000+)and it has 400Mhz Front Side Bus.

Bah! Sorry, I misread :S apologies.

What Multiplier does the board default to to start with, as you mention changing the multiplier?

About the board not booting, this happens to me if I change my multiplier aswell, this is becuase Barton core Athlon XP's have locked multipliers.

Are you sure you have a 3200+, where did you buy it?

Hi,

I'm sure it's a 3200+ and i got if from a retail outlet in the UK called Maplins. The multiplier is set to x11 on Auto in the bios. I have tried x10 also, i get a trap message after post on this setting and failure after post, just a blank screen at x11.

hence i am lost :(

Ahhh! A fellow UK person! :D

Hmmm.....

I think you're going to have to return your CPU to maplins, unless you can borrow a freind's 3200+ to check.

The multiplier is locked at 11x...if you change the setting, the system will not boot. Keep it at AUTO or 11x.

Your video card is not a good gaming card, but it's not causing your problem.

Run thru all your BIOS settings. Here's a few suggestions based on my board, which is similar:

ADVANCED CHIPSET FEATURES

System Performance = User Defined
CPU Interface = Optimal
Memory Frequency = BY SPD, SYNC, or 100%
Memory Timing = Optimal
FSB Spread Spectrum = Disabled
AGP Spread Spectrum = Disabled
CPU Vcore Setting = AUTO (or MENU & set CPU Vcore to 1.65v)
Graphics Aperture Size = 128MB
AGP Frequency = 66MHz

Hi, and thanks for the responses.

I tried setting the bios exactly as you suggested and the system DID post! the bios also recognised an AMD 3200+ proc. Only trouble is system did not boot from operating system, screen just went blank.

I have a 550W PSU but my 5V rail is reading 4.89V (3.3v rail is @3.4V, 12V is reading 12.28V). This is the only thing in the Bios which is not good.

I take on board the point about the 3200+... with the system running @333Mhz FSB sandra sees an XP 2500+ Barton is this just because it's seeing 166 x 11.0 = 1826Mhz? Or could I have a fake????

If you're running the CPU at 11 x 166MHz, it will be recognized as a 2500+ by SANDRA.

Did you check the numbers printed on the CPU to verify that it's a true 3200+? Most 2500+ CPUs will run as 3200+, but many times, a voltage increase is necessary. Just for the heck of it, try the Vcore at 1.75v & see if it will boot into Windows at 11 x 200MHz.

PSU rail voltages will vary somewhat. 5% +/- is "acceptable"...your numbers are fine

+3.3v = 3.135v to 3.465v
+5v = 4.75v to 5.25v
+12v = 11.4v to 12.6v

BTW...how many amps on are on the +12v rail? (check the label on the side of the PSU)

Hi Jam, Thanks for the reply. I got 36A on each rail, 550 W ATX power supply. Just bought a new case today and swapped the guts over in an effort to cut down on the number of fans. Will try what u say and get back.

Ta ;)

You didn't need to get a new case....

"I got 36A on each rail"

If you look at the theoretical numbers, here's what you'd have:

+12V x 36A = 432 watts
+5V x 36A = 180 watts
+3.3V x 36A = 118.8 watts

Total em up & you get 730.8 watts! Something's not right in the way that PSU is rated. Since you said you swapped everything over, that would mean that you had the PSU out, correct? An unscientific way to check the quality of a PSU is by weight...generally, the heavier it is, the better it is. Would you say your's is heavy or light?
