OS: winxp pro
CPU/Ram: 2.4ghz/2gb
Comment:
Hi,

This is my setup :

Biostar TP35D2-A7
Intel E2140 1.6ghz (With stock cooling)
2 x 1gb Kingston PC6400 valueram
XFX 8600GT Fatal1ty (Factory overclocked)
Samsung 320gb HDD
Sony DVDRW
CoolMaster Extreme Plus 460w (Dual rail)

I have a spare 1gb Kingston PC5300 667mhz which i want to add to the pc, but the system failed to boot. Do you know if this board only take ram sticks in pairs? Also, i still can't bring my pc up to 3ghz despite help from jam. if any of you here can help?

http://www.computing.net/cpus/wwwbo...

Thanks

Don't use the DDR2-667 until you get the other settings sorted out. Also, if you add a 3rd stick of RAM, it will disable dual-channel mode.

What have you accomplished with your overclocking so far? Have you verified whether the RAM overclocks as the FSB is raised?

What have you accomplished with your overclocking so far?..

8 x 305mhz ~ 2440mhz(stable). Nothing works more then that. 3Dmark06 = 4205.

"Have you verified whether the RAM overclocks as the FSB is raised?"

I'm a bit confused. The 2 ram sticks are rated 800mhz(PC6400). Do i need to overclock it? even at 8 x 333mhz, it's already well below its 400mhz FSB isn't it right?

I'll post back with the current settings of the "OverClock Navigator Engine", together with available options of each setting. Maybe that could be of help?

NOTE : The pc is currently not with me. Do give me some time to post back. Shall be back within 12hrs. Thanks, jam.

You have to configure the RAM settings in the BIOS so that the memory ALWAYS runs at the same frequency as the CPU. I tried to explain that in your other thread but I'm not sure if you understand or not, or if you got it sorted out. 1:1 ratio is what you're looking for.

Your CPU's frequency is currently 305MHz...that is the frequency the RAM should also be running at. And if you were to raise the CPU freq to 310MHz, the RAM should also run at 310MHz. For best performance, the two frequencies (CPU & RAM) should always stay in step with one another.

Take for example that you wanted to overclock that cpu to 2.6ghz. If you lower your DDR2 800 Ram Freq to 333mhz and raise Cpu Freq to 333mhz, This will give you the 1:1 ratio like jam was saying, because the Ram Freq and Cpu Freq are exactly the same speed.

(Ram Freq 333mhz) x (8x multiplier with Cpu Freq of 333mhz) = 2.6ghz and a ratio of 1:1.

Hi,

I'm back. I do understand what you mean, but, It seem that there's no 1:1 setting in the bios...here's some infos. that i note down, it's a bit lengthy..

Overclock Navigator Engine
==========================

Overclock Navigator - Manual overclock (Normal operation/ Automatic overclock)

CPU EIST - Enabled (Disable)
CPU Clock - 300 (Up to 700)
PCIE Clock select - Fixed 100 (Manual)
System Memory Frequency - Auto (400mhz/667mhz/800mhz/1066mhz)
Dram Configuration - Press Enter > By SPD (Manual)

CPU voltage
===========

CPU voltage - Auto
FSB Termination Voltage - Auto
(G) MCH voltage - Auto
Memory voltage - Auto
Memory 1T/2T command - Auto
Integrated memory test - Disabled

Next, these are from CPU-Z

Core speed - 2400mhz
Multiplier - x 8.0
Bus Speed - 300mhz
Rated FSB - 1200mhz

Dram frequency - 500mhz
FSB : Dram - 3:5
cas# latency - 5.0
Ras# to cas# delay - 5
ras# precharge - 5
cycle time - 18
Command rate - 2T

Cas# latency - 5.0
Ras# to cas# - 5
ras# precharge - 5
tRAS - 18
tRC - 23
voltage - 1.8v

Any thoughts?

NOTE : () Brackets are options which i can choose.

Your FSB:DRAM settings are off and needs to be adjusted to a 1:1 ratio instead of 3:5

"I do understand what you mean, but, It seem that there's no 1:1 setting in the bios"

No, apparently you don't understand. No one ever said there was a setting for 1:1...YOU have to configure the settings so that the CPU freq:DRAM freq ratio becomes 1:1. As Cobra_R stated, your ratio is currently 3:5. In other words, your CPU is 300MHz & your RAM is 500MHz. 300:500 = 3:5.

"Any thoughts?"

I explained this to you in your other thread but you apparently STILL have the RAM set to "BY SPD". You have to MANUALLY configure the RAM settings so that it falls in sync with the CPU freq. And I know I told you that CPU EIST should be disabled. Reread the suggestions in the other thread (I added another response).

ok, i admit i'm slow when it comes to overclocking..lol

so, basically there are 2 things i need to get it done here :

1. Disable CPU EIST.
2. select "manual" in "Dram configuration" and make some changes to allow it to run insync with CPU freq.? (BTW, i don't have the pc with me now, can tell me what should i look for?)

Next, under "System Memory Frequency", should i leave it as "auto" or something else? also, i've disabled cpu throttle, is that correct?

Thanks.

ok, this is what i've done.

"Set the RAM freq to 200MHz (DDR400)...that *should* give you the 1:1 ratio."

System Memory Frequency - 400MHZ
================================

Is that correct? that's the minimum option that i can choose from. I notice "Memory frequency" was always twice the value of "CPU clock", and increases as i increase the "CPU clock". So, it should be 1:1 ratio?

CPU EIST - Disabled
===================

And was set to x 8

Also, i went into "Dram Configuration - Press Enter > Manual" and set to the following figures according to CPU-Z.

Cas# latency - 5.0
Ras# to cas# - 5
ras# precharge - 5
tRAS - 18

Finally, after making the above changes, i was able to run 3DMARK06 @ 8 x 315MHZ without crash/blackout. I did increase CPU voltage up to 1.425 and tried overclock from range between 8 x 320mhz to 8 x 360mhz, but 3DMARK06 either crash or the screen blackout. Is there anyother things i could try?

Thanks..

OK, did you run CPU-Z to confirm that the CPU & RAM are both running at 315MHz? If they are, what you should try to do is determine the highest frequency that this CPU/RAM/board combo can handle. To do that, temporarily lower the CPU multi as low as it'll go (6x?) & begin raising the CPU freq a little at a time, testing for stability after each change. Once you determine the highest stable freq...whether it's 333, 350, 366, 375, etc...try raising the CPU multi. Most sites claim to hit 3.0GHz +/- with stock cooling & many don't even have to bump up the CPU voltage:

Both "Dram frequency" and "FSB : Dram" in CPU-Z are greyed out. Before the changes, it was Dram frequency - 500mhz and FSB : Dram - 3:5. So..i assume they're insync now?

Yes, the lowest multiplier is 6x. I'll try out as suggested and post back asap.

Thanks, jam.

Note : I notice that CPU-Z often report the clock multiplier as 6x even though it was set at 8x in BIOS. (I do have the latest CPU-Z installed)

"i assume they're insync now?"

Don't assume anything. I don't know why the listings would be greyed-out now if they had worked before?

ok, the com was able to boot at 6 x 350mhz. But while 5mins into COD4, the screen blackout. i lowered it to 6 x 345mhz, run it again for 15-20mins and the same thing happened. CPU voltage is 1.325 + 0.087.

I'll try 340mhz or lower tomorrow and see how it goes. Or, do you think 8 x 315mhz is better?

Next,

"Don't assume anything. I don't know why the listings would be greyed-out now if they had worked before?"

I'm not sure why it greyed out too. It used to show the figure before the changes. Is there any other tool which will read the ratio?

Thanks

Overclocking isn't a science, it's trial and error sano, which you are finding out first hand. What Jam and I are telling you is what we would do if we were overclocking a system. Each motherboard series, processor series and ram series are their own beast. You can get a good idea about how to overclock, but you will never get an exact way on how to do it, because in the overclocking world there is no such thing as an exact way to do it. If there was, there would be a step by step method on how to do it and no one would need to experiment.

Hey I own Biostar TP35D2-A7 + E216o.
I tweaked bios settings to reach 3ghz.
The settings
RAM Speed - 400mhz (the lowest in cmos setting)
Clock - 9x
Cpu FSB - 332mhz..
left other settings to default/auto
