Tomorrow I'll be getting in all my parts to build my custom machine, however I neglected to buy an Antistatic Wrist Band to install my processor. Does anyone know if any of the major retailers sell them before I go out tomorrow? (Walmart, Circuit city, Best buy). I live off a highway so there all pretty much in arms reach.

I probably shouldn't admit this, but I haven't worn one in 10 yrs of building PCs

I wear them when working on a high dollar point of sale system to cma...I don't do it with the machines I build for my own use.

Still, I do recommend taking every precaution...since stuff costs good money, at least take the precaution of grabbing the case before you start the build. I try to keeep one hand on the case as much as possible...makes me feel better.

my reasoning exactly. If I don't happen to stumble acrost one then I'll use a little fabric softener on my hands washing them before hand and keep my hand on the case just in case, I'll try office depot since online they seem to be the only company that brings up any search results.

Jam - that puts me abit more at ease about it now :-)

Chris - I've never heard of PCWORLD here in the states, but then again I've only lived in FL and VT, possibly on the west coast?

Thanks,
Doug

Don't build it while working on carpet, keep the machine plugged into the wall when powered off, and always touch the case. Achieves the same thing.

Haven't ESD's a component doing that...ever.

I fit into the jam school of tech on this one. Only difference is I can add a few more years to his since I last used one.

I do, generally, keep my hands on the case with the psu plugged in, but off.But that is only so I don't fall over reaching for another tinny.

I also fit into the school of thought as Jam.

The ESD thingy only came about due to women wearing nylon panty hose in the cooler months of the year. JMO.

25,000 volts of ESD is one hell of a lot of voltage. It is usually capable of knocking out the processor if you do it enough. Trust me, I know. Not sure about the MOSFET though.

BTW Jam, are you wearing panty hose? lol!

I too would have to admit that in 6 years of building PC's I'm yet to wear one and have never had a problem, just dont touch any pins, keep to the board.

Of interest, at uni we just had an earth lead strapped straight into the mains earth terminal...if it's good enough for them i guess it's good enough for you to home make one?

Else do as someone said, plug the power lead in to your PC case but switch it off and just touch the case. Avoid doing the work on a carpet too.
