AMD64 3400+ running at 800mhz???

CPU/Ram: AMD64 3400+ 1GB DDR 3200
Comment:

Could someone please help. I have recently set up a new system which is working fine. Problem is, my CPU, which is an AMD 64 3400+ is only running at a measly 800mhz! What on Earth is wrong here? When I boot, the CPU clock frequency tells me it is 200mhz and everything is set at auto. Is there something on the motherboard I need to change? I've tried a BIOS update but no luck. The M/B is a Gigabyte GA-K8NS. The Gigabyte support site is a joke to be honest. Many thanks in advance!

control panel...power options...

not sure of the exact settings, but i think you should be able to find it there...try power schemes...

kind of a vague answer, but my friend's laptop had the same deal with his A64 3200+ and he looked where i told him

Sounds like Cool'n'Quiet is running. The idea is that the cpu is clocked down by lowering the multiplier with a lowered VCore is the full cpu power isn't needed. That saves power and keeps the cpu cooler.

If you don't want that disable Cool'n'Quiet in the bios!

I wouldn't disable anything until you found out why it's throttling it so much. When you installed it did you have any problems attaching the heat sink? Because if it is throttling that, and not under load, then the temps must be pretty high.

Temps are VERY VERY low, idling betweeb 27C and 30C. It's really baffling me. I've tried updating the BIOS. It shows as AMD64 3400+ on startup and in 'My Computer' properties but only runs at 803mhz as it shows the speed just below the processor type. It's drving me mad! Thanks guys

so does the cool n quiet only lower the multiplyer, or can you tweak it to raise the multiplyer?
can't cool n quiet be disabled in the bios?

Thanks guys, I have checked the BIOS thoroughly and there is no setting for 'Cool N Quiet' mode. I have also enabled 'Top Performance'. I'veplayed around with the multiplier etc and managed to get it to a whopping 920mhz (not). Even from the POST screen it tells me my CPU is 3400+ and the clock frequency is running at 200mhz. Does anyone know what the correct settings should be because it's set like this automatically. Thanks again!

My Athlon 64 3500+ standard settings were:

Multiplier = 11
FSB = 200
HTT = x 5

So i guess yours is supposed to be 10 x 200?

I can't even increase the Multiplier beyond 6.5 before the computer freezes. I've tried tweaking the FSB and the muliplier but to no avail. Also, I don't like the idea of the BIOS giving me warning messages saying my CPU is over-clocked even though it is running at 900mhz!!! It's really starting to get to me. The Gigabyte support site is a complete joke. You have to register every little detail from the Motherboard, plus they don't even have a telephone support line, just an e-mail system which is unsatisfying to say the least. I am running out of ideas fast. Just to confirm, there is nothing about 'cool 'n quiet' in the BIOS. Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully we'll get there soon!

I have just ran CPU-Z and it tells me the following:
CPU Name: AMD Athlon 64 3400+
Code Name: Clawhammer
Brand ID: 4
Package: Socket 754
Technology: 0.13
Voltage: 1.152v
Core Speed 803.9 mhz
Muliplier: x4.0
HTT: 201.0 mhz
Level 2 Cache: 1024KBytes

Is the voltage perhaps too low?

My gigabyte motherboard ( k8nsnxp-939 ) has no option for cool and quite either but i have been told that it is still activated. It does have an option for thermal throttling but i was told this is different and is gigabytes baby not AMD... go figure..

Sounds like a heat problem is tripping somthing?

It's strange that you're not able to disable Cool'n'Quiet. Check your manual if it's possible to do it by jumper on the board.

And run some cpu intensive benchmark and check the results with others comparable to your system. If they fit then the cpu will run at normal speed if needed and you don't have to worry!

Make sure Power Options (in control panel)

does not have MINIMAL as the power scheme

because this would also activate Cool'n'Quiet (it does on my AMD 64 3000+)

Thanks for the reply guys. Now an update. I have managed to get the CPU running near it's proper speed. I had to up the voltage to 1.5v (normal) using Gigabyte's tweaking tool 'EasyTune 4'. Still, the system will reboot or freeze if I try and run a benchmark. After eventually speaking to someone in Gigabyte's 'extremely poor' support department, he concluded that the board was faulty and needs replacing. Although I can change settings from Windows, BIOS does not register ANY changes. To disable Cool N' Quiet, I had to turn off the 'Auto' setting for the multiplier, which I did. Even still it would not move over 803mhz. I am sending the board back for a refund. I have now bought a MSI KT8 neo, which I've heard brilliant reviews about (www.tomshardware.com). Thanks for all your help guys. Turns out the board is faulty then!

Here's something interesting I've just found. In the Device Manager, when I click the 'plus' under 'processors', there's a yellow explanation mark telling me Windows could not load the device driver for this hardware (code 39). What could this be???

Thanks

I have same problem with an MSI Motherboard and an AMD64 3400 running at 800 MHZ. (MB set at fsb 200 at 11x)I Emailed tech services at AMD and they said it was cool n'quiet causing chip to ease off if not under load. However I have switched it off in bios and Benchmarks from both Sisoft Sandra and Dr Hardware show its performance as only 800 Mhz so have emailed them again.
A couple of weeks ago I read in Micromart that there were a lot of Duff oem chips on the market, mine is an oem chip!
