Comment: Hi Guys, I am trying to overclock my AMD64 (Newcastle) 3200, I manage 218 x11 @ 2.398Ghz, when I try to change in the bios 220 x11 @2.420Ghz Windows XP Pro works fine, but some games are crashing, other issue is my Netgear Wireless PCI Card which works and find network connections, but it does get connected. PLEASE HELP. My motherboard is an Asus K8N-E Deluxe and I am not sure if I can lockup my PCI slots. PLEASE HELP. My last upgrade was 2x Corsair XMSA TWINX DDR400 256Mb to add to my previous Corsair XMS DDR400 512Mb, before my memory frequency was running at 200Mhz (Check with CPU-Z) and since I got my two modules of 256Mb each its running at 171Mhz, I have also realise that the latency between the 1x 512mb and 2x 256mb is diferent (512mb @200Mhz Latency 3.0 and 2x 256mb @200Mhz Latency 2.5), I don't think that I can configurate individually my memory slots. Please help me with these matters. Many Thanks Mauro Rocha (07838121243) Case - Coolermaster Stacker Mobo - Asus K8N-E Deluxe CPU - AMD64 Newcastle 3.2 @ 2.398Ghz 218 x11 CPU Cooler - Asus Star Ice Memory - 1x Corsair XMS DDR400 512Mb 2x Corsair XMSA DDR400

Reply: (edit)Thanks for your reply Jam, which voltage do you mean? And how much should I increase? Reply: (edit)Thanks indigian! I now got my socket939 3000+ winchester to 2700MHz on a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe. About the socket754 newcastle I have absolutely no idea how far you may get it. But the way to go should be the same! There are a few new things you have to work with. The most important is the HT or Hyperthreading frequnecy. With your socket754 board it's meant to run at 800MHz and it's the main connection between chipset and cpu. There shouldn't be a problem with running it at a somewhat lower speed but above 800MHz you may run into problems. It's build from the FSB and the HT multiplier that in your case should be 4x at the FSB of 200MHz. The ram is no longer connected over the chipset but directly to the cpu that has an inbuild ram controller. The ram speed will rise at the same percentage as the FSB. For example raising the FSB by 10% will also raise the set ram clock by 10%. For testing out the cpu you should make sure you don't run into trouble with other parts. So make the following changes: -HT multiplier: 3x (for FSB above 266MHz 2x) -Ram: set to DDR266 (133MHz) -Ram CL: put in the correct CL settings manually because otherwise the board may automatically use lower CL setting at the lower speed which will not work! -Disable Cool'n'Quiet -Set the PCI clock to 33MHz (or AGP clock to 66) -disable all onboard functions you don't really need Now you can slowly raise the FSB and run benchmarks. I suggest 3DMark 03 because it on the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum I had before it showed graphic errors as I reached the the limit. If everything works well you can raise another step. I suggest 3 to 5MHz as single steps. The higher you go the lower the steps you should take. If the cpu becomes unstable you can try to raise the cpu voltage (or VCore) one step. How high you can gfo depends very much on the cpu you have because there are no two identical cpus out there. According to my information your newcastle normally runs at 1,55V VCore so you shouldn't go above 1,65V or 1,7V to be mostly safe. And keep an eye on the temperature. More VCore means more heat and that shouldn't go above 60°C. After you know how far the cpu can go you can check out what the other components can do. As an example if you can reach 270MHz with HT x2 it might also work with HT x3 at 810MHz HT frequency. But changing you ram to DDR333 (166MHz) would mean it will run at 448MHz and I doubt that will work. As an example. My 3000+ will run up to 9x300MHz on my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe which means 50% OCed. With a HT multiplier it stay inside the 1000MHz range of the socket939 boards but for your socket754 it would be 100MHz too high so you needed to run it at 2x. My normal VCore is 1,4V and in the above case I set it to the maximal setting of 1,55V which give me an actual VCore of 1,58 to 1,6V. My Ram is set to DDR266 (or 133MHz) and with the 50% OC I'm back to full DDR400 speed. The nice thing of this is that theoretically every DDR400 ram should work!
I hope that helps so far!

Reply: (edit)Uppsss.... Forgot to mention that it's possible you need to upgrade your bios. On my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe OCing was a total desaster with the 1002 bios because the PCI lock to 33MHz was missing but with 1003 bios everything works very well!

Reply: (edit)No, no XP64 yet and I wouldn'd get it before I know everything might work properly with that. I got my first Athlon64 the week after christmas with a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum board because I still wanted to use my AGP MSI FX5900XT-VTD128 graphic card. The only problem was it had no gameport and after installing the system I realised I couldn't install the gameport of any soundcard because the chipset just blocked all the 02xx I/O adresses I needed. I also tried USB to gameport adapters but they didn't work with my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback pro joystick. I tried about a dozen installations of XP with all reasonable bios settings but nothing worked. Just then a friend asked me to build him a game computer for his kids and we made a deal. He took my board, CPU and graphic card and in exchange for the new ones I build and installed his system for free instead of the money he would give me. He saved quite a bit of money and got a very good system that I knew worked perfectly besides the joystick issue and I didn't need to buy a new joystick and got a pci express system. But I again had to install the OS and all the software and I'm still not fully done. So at the moment I'm not interested in another new installation. And with Windows Longhorn coming this year I think of changing directly to that then!

Reply: (edit)Thanks for all replies, now I will be testing it runing as follows: 240 x10 @ 2400Mhz v1.575 What do you think about that? and it seems to be working fine, except that my Neatgear Wireless Network Card is always runing very low signal and disconecting constantly. Please help on that. Reply: (edit)If you run at the normal setting it the card works? Then you have to set the PCI Lock to 33MHz. I'm sure the bios on your K8N should have it but maybe at another name. If you change the FSB the PCI clock will also change. Normally PCI devices work at 33MHz so above 37MHz most become problems. Fixing it to 33MHz will get rid of that problem. On my Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe I had it not from start but needed to install the latest bios that just came out last week so you may need to update yours too!

Reply: (edit)I have an AMD64 3.2 and have no idea what Overclocking is or how to do it. I think I know a little about it. It's for making your CPU faster, and able to do more right? I'm a 3D, Graphics Guy, ya know, Illustrator, QuarkXP, Photoshop, Lightwave 3D, Cool 3D, Director, Dramweaver, Frontpage, Freehand, Flash, Corel Draw, AutoCAD, all that type-a-stuff. What can I do to learn, and then to start OCing my CPU, and does doing that void any warrenties? , and how much more speed can one expect from OCing? Treat others the way you want to be treated. It's really just that easy. xersius_x
