Hi guys, I have been reading her for a while and this site rules but finally registered tonight. My problem is with a new mb and cpu I have. I ordered a 3000 XP AMD CPU and a M848LU MB (PC Chips) and when I after I post and get a AMD XP 1700 + reading when it boots. I believe the order was messed up and somehow got a 1700 instead of a 3000. I didn't know if the higher up CPU's stop reading at 1700 or not or I just have the wrong CPU. Sorry, probably a dumb question. It's an AMI BIOS if that matters? and why does it only show 1300mhz even it is a 1700? I think I'm going to be playing the RMA game I guess.

Firstly, don't get confused by names and numbers. The way AMD name their chips is to give a comparison to Intel chips. So an Xp 3000 is equal to a P4 3 GHz, and an Xp 2500 is equal to a P4 2.5 GHz. Just because they run with less MHz, doesn't mean they aren't just as powerful as the P4 chips.

It sounds to me like the FSB needs to be raised in your BIOS. I reckon it's probably at 100, but when you put it up to 166/200 you should have your Xp 3000 back.

I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

Oops, forgot to say, an Xp 3000 runs at 2167 MHz, so that's what you're aiming for.

Thanks Hooner, but it seems that it is defaulted to 166 in auto detect. (CPU Freq) I manually put it to 200 and it wouldn't boot. Cleared cmos and back to square 1. The processor will list it's speed twice, the first time you see it is when the system first boots. The very first letters on the screen read as follows "AMD XP 1700+" and then reads the pri/sec drives. I believe this is the true processor reading? SHouldn't it say 3000XP? Hooner answered my second question which is where it reads the clock speed at 1300mhz which I guess is equivelant to 1700XP. If I bought a 3000 XP, shouldn't read 3000 XP instead of 1700 XP at start up?

Yes it should, but only if you have the correct FSB setting in your BIOS, which it seems clear you have tried and is not working.

I'd say you've been had for a cheaper chip.

I don't suffer from insanity, I embrace it.

When i first got my 1700+, it showed as a 1100+ (i think it was that figure). turned out how i had to remove the FSB jumper from my mobo. soon as i did this it read correctly

Most MB's I have dealt with have had a jumper to select from 133/100 FSB. This is my first DDR MB and I don't see a jumper. I have read the manual through and through and still don't see it. There might not be one a jumper. Is that possible? I don't know. I just know my $160 chip I paid for is showing as a $40 chip, lol. I would hate to return it to find I missed something. (Like a jumper setting).

Didn't you look at the CPU when you got it? The speed is printed right on it.

The 3000+ runs at 2167mhz (13.0 x 166mhz) or at 2100mhz (10.5 x 200mhz)...it depends on what version you have.

The 1700+ runs at 1467mhz (11.0 x 133mhz).

With the default multipler setting for either 3000+ version, I don't see how it would be recognized as a 1700+. If your FSB defaults to 133mhz, a 13.0x multi would be recognized as a 2100+...a 10.5x multi would be recognized as a 1600+

Your board supports 133mhz (266DDR) & 166mhz (333DDR) FSB only. The 200mhz (400DDR) FSB is NOT officially supported. Here's what it says about 400DDR on the PCChips site:

"This specification is done by the overclocking technique. However, the overclocking technique might come with certain risks that we can't guarantee a normal operation with such a technique."

Are these settings right? (BIOS Settings)
Detect CPU Frequency ------------> Auto
CPU Frequ
Auto Detect DRAM Frequency ------> Enabled
CPU/DRAM Clock Ratio ------------> [1:1]DRAM Frequency ------------------> 133

I wasn't aware I would have had to mess with any of these settings. I figured it would reconize what type CPU I had. Should I change the DRAM or CPU Frequency? Or both?

Sorry .....
Detect CPU Frequency - Auto
CPU Frequency - 166
Auto Detect DRAM Frequency - Enabled
CPU'DRAM Clock Ratio - [1:1]
DRAM Frequency - 133

Sorry guys, - I have the right chip, it now reads as a 3000+. I changed the above to :

Detect CPU Frequency - Auto
CPU Frequency - 166
Auto Detect DRAM Frequency - Disabled ****Changed***
CPU'DRAM Clock Ratio - [5:6] ****Changed***
DRAM Frequency - 200 ****Changed***

Hopefully learning a lesson : Since my FSB was showing as 133 it wouldn't allow it to show correctly? Is that right? That would be ok if I was using pc133 or pc100, right? but since I'm using DDR PC2100 it has to be set to 200? Doesn't pc2100 actually run at 266 though?

Sorry guys about the questions, maybe I should start another thread since the original issue has been resolved but I don't want to be on a fine line of double posting as that gets annoying I know.

1) What CPU Frequency should I be running? It is at AUTO/166 now.
2) I have been trying to figure out where my "clock multipliers" are but think it may be called the "CPU/DRAM Clock Ratio" in my bios? If you normally set it to 10X then how does that translate in my bios?
3) Is my FSB called the DRAM Frequency?
4) Shouldn't it be set to 266 since I'm running pc2100?

It's running now but I don't want it to overheat or set it wrong.

Frequency = bus speed

Your 3000+ either runs at 166mhz (333DDR) or 200mhz (400DDR)...sounds like you have the 166mhz/333DDR version

DRAM frequency is the memory bus speed. PC2100 runs at 133mhz (266DDR).

You'll get better system performance by running the CPU & RAM at the same speed (166mhz). You really should have PC2700 RAM because it's made to run at 166mhz (333DDR), but your PC2100 "may" handle the increased speed if it's good quailty RAM. Since your RAM is designed to run at 133mhz, you'll have to set the CPU/DRAM ratio to adjust for the difference in speeds. When set at 1:1, both frequencies will run at the same speed (166/166)...when set at 4:5, you'll get 166/133. You have it at 5:6, so you RAM is slightly overclocked (166/139)...that shouldn't be a problem. Ideally though, you want 1:1 (166/166)

If you can change your DRAM voltage (vdimm), you should have better luck at 2.7v, rather than the default setting of 2.5v

I had to reinstall the OS since I loaded it at 200mhz on the ram side I guess it got currupted? After change my settings to 166/166 it loaded successfully and appears to be stable. It's Cruicial ram so it's real cheap but I have seen a couple bad reviews on Crucial, but more good than bad. I will try running at 166/166 and if it's crashes I know to set back to 133 on the ram side. I wish I knew this before I bought pc2100. Thanks alot Jam and all you guys. You guys are awesome.
