If the choice is between a dual core AMD and a hyperthreading P4 and the goal is video encoding, then my choice would be the AMD Dual Core hands down. Hyperthreading does not have anywhere near the efficiency of dual core.

Having said that though, if the choice is between a Dual Core AMD and a comparable Dual Core P4, then the decision isn't as clear cut.

If besides videos, you are gaming, then go AMD all the way. It's way better for gaming.
Besides, you are choosing between a dual core processor and a single core processor w/hyperthreading. There is no comparison... the x2 4200 will beat that p4 in everything.

Get the AMD X2 4400+ instead, it is equivalent to Dual Athlon64 3700+ or Dual Opteron 248 Processors.

You also get twice as much cache as the 4200+.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Cores. They are the future and many programs starting by the end of this year will support dual core mode. Not to mention the Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 singles cores are getting phased out.

Even budget processors will be getting phased out by budget Dual Cores within the next 3 years, an early sign of that is the Pentium D 805 out now.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 6800GT
SATA II 250gig 7200rpm 8mb cache
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI
