i am very farmiliar with intel processors but i've heard that AMD's are better amoung the gaming community. so i have a couple of questions.
1. what is your preference?
2. what would be the AMD "equivalent" to say, a pentium 4?
thanks

AMD 64's are better at gaming, because they are better overclockers then Intel's new P4's and Hyper-transport helps boost AMD processors graphic preformance.
In gaming I would say an P4 3.4ghz is equal to an AMD 64 3200+ on avg.

To begin with, there's not much difference. AMD had a good 2004 and Intel had a crappy 2004.
It should pretty much level out this year just like the competition has in the past.
I really didn't intend to be cute with my first response...the idea is the same as last year and the year before. Generaly, it's a toss up but with AMD the winner for the greater part of 2004 and the first half of this year. That will all swing one way or the other during the latter half of this year and next year.
I have some favorite machines and they include an Intel 2.4Ghz P4 and an AMD 2400+.
The hyperthreading Intel 2.4 is wonderful for getting work done without hassles and the 2400+ is great for allround use. My choice for a lot of reasons is both machines.OK, so that's 2 year old technology and doesn't apply to 2005? I don't think that's true.
Although my above choice would have been the P4C 2.4 two years ago, I'd go with an AMD today. Tomorrow could easily be somethng from Intel.
Either choice would certainly make me happy but no matter what you do today, you'll attract those who are happy to tell you that you're a moron and made the wrong decision.
Do some reserch, ask for more advice with hardware choices, and don't worry about keepng up with the Jones'
You are the Jones' and you only end up chasing your own tail.
