I had a system consultant upgrade one computer to a Pentium-4 1.7 Ghz w/ 2-512MB RAMBUS simms a while ago (Sept, 01). Later I upgraded another computer to an AMD Athelon 1800+ XP w/ 1-512MB DDR chip myself. The AMD only runs at 1533 Mhz, however, it "appears" much faster than the Pentium-4. I've heard that Intel is ahead in the CPU speed wars but I'm wondering if this is true.

Hi
The P4 is optimized for office programs like Excel, Word etc while the AMD Athlon XP is more optimized for gameing, so I have heard
In sisoft Sandra my Athlon XP 2100+ @ 1.76GHZ out performed a P4 2.4GHZ B I was suprised at that
In some cases AMD is better than Intel and Intel better than AMD, but they are just as good as each other, they are both exelent CPU's
Zero Cool

The P4 1.7 is probably an old Willamette P4 with 256K of L1 Cache. A Northwood P4 would probably fair more favorably. But as Zero Cool said, it depends on what applications you use.

AMD is generally significantly cheaper and perform the same, so, there's no reason not to get an AMD.

Athlon 1800 XP is named so as AMD tests show it runs at the same speed (actually slighlty faster) than the Pentium4 1.8ghz.
The use of GHZ on modern CPUS is very deceptive, and does not give a valid representation of their performance.
Put it bluntly. If you want a really fast machine, around 2.ghz, nothing on God's earth should persuade you NOT to buy an AMD.
They are cheaper, and BETTER than Intel's.
If you have a Pentium 4, fair enough, but I will never buy an Intel CPU until they seriously lower the price.

yea that is very true but amd needs more cooling then p4 and p4 cant get friend because it got protection it will shout down or it will slow down amd will burn out
amd are good cpu but if ur getting amd get good heat sink expecialy when u are playing games if u wonna buy a cheper cpu get amd if u wonna get a expensive one get p4 225$
amd 150$ or lower ur choice they are bouth good cpus

LISTEN GUYS! I have worked with over 600 computers and there are certain disadvantages of both processors. AMD processors keep a high temperature, which means that the life expectancy of your PC will go down. Heat and electronics do not mix. On the other hand Intel is a bit more expensive. I use Intel and always will, I tested out an AMD Duron 1ghz and a Pentium III 1 Ghz, they were about the same speed but the difference in OVERALL system performance for the INTEL was much better. Most companies work with INTEL, its obvious, dont we see printed in the boxes "minimun requirents: Pentium II etc". Be smart, dont be cheap. I proved in my tests that computers with Intel crash less and give out the best performance ever. And think about this! Dont say that AMD is better because you managed to afford it and not a Pentium. Dont talk through your assess, both processors are good but,one is better and that is Intel. Im sorry for those who use AMD but thats the way it is. Visit their websites and read their technologies...read most of the reviews...
For those of you who claim AMD is better, then why the hell is Intel more expensive YET the #1 selling processor in the world?

I don't know what AMDs you have been working with but from what I have seen AMDs run cooler than the P4s.
P4 systems come with case fans etc and still run hotter than the AMDs w/o case fans.
on the crash note, I have never had my AMD system crash. period.
performance, no the P4s do not outperform in most cases. Take a 1.5Ghz P4, a 1.5 AMD XP and run them side by side, the AMD wins hands down. my AMD XP 1800+ beats a P4 1.7 I know hands down, it leaves it in its dust more specifically.
AMD XP 1800+
RADEON 8500 64
256 DDRP4 1.7
Ti4600 128
786 SDREAMS it. 3dmarks, AMD system ~3000 points higher than the P4 (3dmarksSE)
In conclusion of my rant, AMD is cheaper, and faster (in MOST cases), AMD does run cooler from experience. As long as you buy a decent board etc there is NO WAY that AMD is going to crash before a P4 would.

not as an insult or anything, to all you Intel junkies, but AMD is better, I've used a P4 1.7, and I have a 1700+ my 1700+ is WAY faster than the P4. My AMD also runs cooler than the P4s that I have seen, my temps never go above 107F and that is on a full load. Price means nothing, Look at ATItech and NVidia, NVidia prices are enormus, ATi for a better card is cheaper. The benchmarks prove it, same with the benchmarks for the AMD processors, they beat the benchmarks of all the Intel processors which are suposedly "better" than the AMD of "equivalent status", I love my AMD and would never in my entire life go back to another Intel CPU EVER, I can't stand the hype about intel, their products are inferior, look at the 3.06GHz and the Athlon 3000+ which runs at about 2.5GHz, the 3000+ is better in tests than the 3.06 P4, all in all AMD offers a good price for a supperior product!

In order to determine which processor is better, you need to do a controlled experiment. In other words, you need to have everything the same with the exception of the board and the chip. You need to have the same type of hard drive with the same access time, 5400 / 7200 rpm. You need to have the same type of ram. You can not have DDR in one machine and have SDRam in the other because DDR has a faster access time than SD. You will also need to pick a board manufacturer that makes boards for Intel and AMD; take MSI for example, they make a board for both chips and the boards have the same type of memory. Each machine will have to have the same OS and software. Each machine will need to have the same peripherals, i.e. printers, cameras, usb devices. Now the test begins. Try some simple tasks like burning a cd, printing a word doc, and playing music on media player all at the same time. What happens??? I will tell you what happens. The AMD processor will lag. Why??? Because the AMD chip is overclocked coming out of the box. The AMD chip does not have the FSB or the cache that the Intel chip has. Now what would happen if you tell the motherboard to overclock an already overclocked chip????? You are asking for trouble. Intel does not have to overclock its chips because of the FSB and cache. If you take the same speed AMD and Itel chip and perform a single task, the AMD chip will appear faster because it is overclocked. However, when multiple functions come into play; surfing, burning, printing, and playing music or video files, Intel will out perform the AMD chip. It is clearly a matter of taste. If all you want to do is play, then by all means, get the AMD chip. But if you want to work and play at the same time, there is no other alternative but Intel.

yea that is right is like the car u take the honda ex and booster to the max and i will ride the mustang cobra normal cobra of course the honda is gonna beat mustang because amd is already boosted to the max
1u wonna test which one is batter and dark amdn run hotter that intel for ur info k listen lec take amd xp 2000 and intel 2000 hd with the same speed ram same both system have to be same then test them
or this run the same game on bouth amd and intel ul see that the amd will slow down alot intel will continue at the same speedamd run coller than intel hahah funny
keep this in mind the amd is all ready oveclocked intel is not then if the amdn is batter why is the intel around 300 and amd 180$ because intel will last longer then amd
and intel is batter build the amd

dark k do this take the p4 and amdn 1800x ant take the heat sinks from bouth pc and turn them on then talle me which cpu crash pl do that then ul see the difference between intel and amd amdn will fry in obut 30 to 40 sec intel will slow down but it will not fry same with p3

did u see the the video p3 p4 vs amdn i think it was xp1800 and xp1700+ bouth of the amdn fry in sec p3 slow down and freez p4 slow down dont freez and it didnt fry go check the video

Ok Peoples...Listern,
The phrases Mhz and Ghz pretty much dont mean anythig anymore. I find that AMD's are more pleasing. Intel's FSB runs to high which pretty much leaves it no where else to run, where as AMD' FSB is nice and low so it has more guts to push itself for the video games and still flying past intel. Oh yeah and about out which is hotter, Intel. You think about it there FSB is running at 533 and the chip is so small where as the AMD run at 133 and the chip is nice and big giving the heat anough room to spread around.
Any i know that AMD are much much better thats why i choose to go with AMD with office use and gaming use cause youll always need some performance in your system.
