Hi,

Quick question really, I have an AMD "Barton" Athlon XP3000+ running at 2.17Ghz. What sort of temperatures should I be getting? The Cooler I have at the moment is Thermaltakes Volcano 11+ 3400+ and on idle I'm getting roughly 45C (low RPM) and 32C (High RPM)... Really I'd like to know what temperature I should start to get concerned about? At the moment my mind starts to wander when it reaches 48C...

I've got an Athlon XP 1700+ running at 1800+ "speed" loaded with a stock cooler in a mini tower case, which means fan is right up against the PSU!

I get 22 degrees on a freezing cold day (you get that a LOT here in the UK!) and about 60 degrees under full load. You have a decent CPU and a decent cooler - unlike me - and you get getting good temps. I would only start worrying when it gets near (or above!) 60 degrees. ;)

Somewhere between 62c-70c is where most amd cpus lock up. I suggest remaining calm if you never go above 56c in normal use.

A stress management progressive exposure exercise you can do is to run toast for a couple hours with the fan on low rpm and use your machine for whatever at the same time. You'll get well into the 50s but probably will not go over 60c, and your machine will handle it fine. After that, 48c won't even make you blink.

Thanks mate, really really appreciate your help. I'll try that program. I'm not new to computers but I'm new to installing a CPU, so I wasn't 100% sure, thanks again.

At 10 minutes it's very close to levelling off. With the fan on low, 60c after 10 minutes is not really unusual. I'd try it again and see where it levels off, and stays stable. Watch the program and turn the machine off if/when the machine locks up.

My Duron and 2400+ will run about the same at the 10' mark too. They both top out at ~62° if toast is allowed to run. Temps are same motherboard, same case with a thermocouple under the core. The Duron begins to give me problems at about 65°C and the 2400+ performance seems to go to crap at just about 70° and I've gotta turn the case fans off to get them that hot. It's not a very scientific test as I don't know for sure if the cpu's or something else are causing the slowdowns.

Looks like our experiences are pretty close Skip. One day I toasted 5 amd systems with undervolted fans to see when they locked up and that's where I got the 62c-70c range.

btw I could not get the chillvent to work on my main system since the sk7+fan+mounting clips cause it to protrude too high, so the chillvent pushed on it, causing the sink/cpu mating to be uneven. I'll try it on another system somewhere along the line. Seems like a good idea and good product.

Hi Aaron,

I'm in Telford in Shropshire... We've had snow on and off for the past 3 or 4 days! lol

I got about 22 degrees this morning for a **cold** boot!

Thanks people, really appreciate your help. I'm a lot wiser now, n' I guess I don't have to go and spend £30 on a decent FAN... cheers again... and Hey James, same in Boston, Lincs (I'm from London though, feel ashamed to say I live in Boston, don't want people thinking I'm from here, lol)
