Socket AM2+ brings more then a motherboard update, it also brings in new cpus, with new names. The new socket AM2+ "Phenom" cpu series are set to replace all Athlon FX series and all but one Athlon 64 X2 series on the socket AM2+ platform. Single core processors on the socket AM2+ are now redcued to the Semprons AM2+ series.
So what I get from this is that the Athlon 64 X2 on the socket AM2+ platform has now been reduced to a budget dual core cpu with only L2 cache instead of having L3 cache like its Phenom X2 predecessor.
any rumoured pricing yet? on the budget and regular dualcores? im still extremely pissed that bout 7 months after i bought a $450 X2 4400+, they reduced the price by 55% AND now, its discontinued. THe only consolation i have is the 1MB L2 cache :(

This is a never ending cycle, IIRC, the very first bobos to adopt Intel's E6300 paid what will get you an E6700 today & I'm sure some are probably more bitter now too. Not to worry if this is your first time of having this happen to you - you'll get over it in due course.
Unfortunately, many will continue to make the same mistake over & over again as they aren't disillusioned enough to understand the cycle. If it is of any consolation I also have a buddy who is naturally quick to jump at the latest hardware & very often without an apparent computational need.

Isn't this development about three years out there now.........LOL
I myself am skipping the whole AM2 platform and waiting for AM3. That way i don't have to worry about memory getting phased out like i would if i built a AM2 system now with DDR2. Plus, AMD will have a brand new set of processors by then that should exceed my current processor nicely which would give me a solid reason to upgrade. Not to mention PCI-X 2 and SATA III that will be introduced to AM3 boards shortly after they debut.
we are prob going to see a decent amount of changes in 2008 in regards to processors and newer hard ware config like we did in 2004 with the intro of DDR2, SATA II, and PCI-X.
yeap i understand the cycle. but still it annoys me :D and the L2 cache was because i think on the 939 platform, only the 4400 has 1MB L2, as opposed to the 512 L2 of the other models, excluding the 4800, which cost much more than 4400 and wasnt worth it. my 4400 is clocked at 11x430 which is fine with me. speaking of which, AM3 will be the main platform for AMD's Quads, correct?
