I was just wondering, when comparing Athlon XP speeds to Intel Speeds, what's the deal. When I have a Athlon XP-M 3000+, is that basically the same as an Intel 3.0 Ghz. is the Athlon ****+, whatever the **** stands for, the speed. For example, is an Athlon XP-M 2000+ the eqivalent to 2.0 Ghz and the 3200+ the equivalent to 3.2 Ghz? Because when I was lookin to build my own laptop on the HP site, and it gave me the Athlon 2800+ or the 3000+, but said both were 1.6 Ghz??? I hope you understand what I'm sayin, and I'd appreciate any adice youd have for me. Thanks!!

In a nutshell, yes. A 2000+ is easily comprable to a 2.0Ghz P4 and a 3200+ is pretty close to a 3.2Ghz P4.

Much also depends on the rest of the system like, how good is the motherboard. It's one thing to compare processors but entirely another to compare systems if one has lo end components and the other has hi end components.

Still, fast is fast. Get or build a system that suits your wants and needs. Lotsa info on these forums about just that.

First of all, athlon are faster than intel cos they move larger chunks of data.Benchmarks show athlon 2000 comparing to intel 2.2 or even 2.4!So I would say that a 2000, 2500, 3000etc run faster than thier rivals, intel 2ghz, 2.5ghz, 3ghz etc.In my opinion anyways, I think most people on here would agree!

Not to be arguementative with Pariah but what he states if true to a degree. AMD performs more work per clock cycle than Intel. That is why a processor with a slower clock speed can compare to the faster one. They both move " the same size chunks of data each time though as both are 32 bit processors.

AMD processors are not named according to the speed that the processor runs, they are named according to how that particular processor matches against an Intel P4 processor. For example, the AMD XP 1800+ runs at 1.53Ghz, but its performance is equivalent to a Intel P4 1.8Ghz.

"PC buyers usually rely on the clock speed (megahertz) of a PC's microprocessor to determine their purchasing decision. Because the industry lacks a simple, universally accepted way to judge performance, users have become conditioned to substituting clock speed to gauge how fast their applications will run."
-AMD

in other words, amd is so ahead of intel, that it has to lower itself to keep a fair competition.:-P
