Ok Today as it was my birthday i decided to take my PC to a shop to get it upgraded with a new 80GB hard drive with the money i had.The owner told me that my Intel Pentium 3 Processor couldn't go any faster. He suggested that i left my pc with him so he can fit a new motherboard in with a AMD Sempron +3000 processor.Problem is i can't tell which one is better.I only need it so my PC can run smoothly and can run programs like Macromedia Flash 8 and Microsoft Office 2003.My friends told me to stick with my Pentium 3 CPU in the likes of the programs. But the owner also said my current motherboard can't handle the size of the new hard drive.Has anyone got suggestions on which one to choose?

It depends on the speed of your p3 if its at least 600mhz or so then your fine for office and flash. With 512mb of ram and a bios update to use the 80gb drive you should have a plenty powerfull enough system. I have a p3 733 with similar specs and it runs on XP great. there are slightly longer loading times but when the app is up it runs smooth.

Nothing's broken until you choose not to fix it.

A salesman/shop assistant will tell you a lot of things if he thinks he can get more money out of you.My advice would be, if your not running any high end apps like new games and things, stick with what you've got.You can always try your new hard drive first, if it doesn't work, then you can think of upgrading your cpu/mobo.If it does work, great!

P4 2.6gig,
Gigabyte GA-8S648Fxm m/b,
512mb Anti-Static PC3200 RAM
80gig hdd,
Ati radeon 9600 256mb graphics

the shop guy wants you to spend more $$$, plain and simple. a Pentium 3 processor is plenty capable of Flash, Office '03, etc and even some light gaming with older games. trust me your friends are right stik with your P3 and with the latest BIOS update from the maker of the system and/or motherboard, it will take the 80gb drive with ease. my P3 HP system took a new WD1200JB 120gb hard drive that i bought without batting an eye (figuratively speaking, of course)

comparing your p3 to a sempron is like comparaing an athlon to a p4. There's so many versions out. My old athlon @1.2ghz felt faster than any p3 out mobile wise. Semprons also have a 754 socket model which by all means is faster than the fastes p3 at everything. I'll even go as far as saying that the newest semprons for the 462 socket are also faster than a p3 and the semprons are pretty old by today's standards. Hell even the earliest p4s were slower than some of the p3s as far as performance went not mhz/ghz. If you're happy with the way your pc performs with the apps you use it for you shouldn't upgrade, unless you want something faster and more capable of running todays programs and hardware, an example is you're never gonna get pci-e support on a p3. Even if your motherboard board doesn't support 80gbs you can keep your old drive and use the 80gb as an external you may even want to get a usbII card.

Truth can become lie, but if lies become truth we're in trouble.
