CPU/Ram: AMD Classic K7
Comment:

Hello,

I've upgraded my cpu but it only boots upto the xp pro logo and restarts and repeats process.

I cleared the CMOS
Reinstalled XP Pro with the new cpu
but locks up before the "enter serial numbers" screen.

AMD K7 Classic 750Mhz
Upgrade:
AMD K7 Classic 850Mhz
OS:
Windows XP Pro (OS has been installed on many computers with no problems)
MoBo:
Soyo SY-K7VIA supports upto 1Ghz

What can be the cause of this?
Does this have anything to do with the BIOS?

Thank you.

These are the BIOS:
I keep thinking that my bios are k7via2aa4 which is the latest so I don't need an upgrade, but not 100% sure as Im not home right now.

k7vi2aa4.bin
This upgrade requires Awdflash.exe
2000-09-18
K7VIA 2aa4 BIOS

k7vi2aa3.bin
This upgrade requires Awdflash.exe
2000-07-13
BIOS Revision: K7VIA_2AA3

The system restarts at the windows xp pro splash with the 850Mhz Cpu after OS reinstalled with the 750Mhz (just a swap)
a fresh os install with the new cpu won't even get to the "enter serial" screen and just locks up.

Thanks

That really isn't much on an upgrade. Your board is highly overclockable...you could have done just as well by leaving the 750 in place & just increasing the FSB to 110-112mhz...that'd put your CPU speed at 825-840mhz, plus you'd have the performance benefits of a higher FSB.

Make sure the CPU you're trying to install is compatiable with the board. Some boards will accept the Athlon Slot A "Classic" only...& there are 2 versions of the Classic...the "A" & "C". Some boards will accept one, but not the other. And if your 850 is a Thunderbird, that could be the problem too. If you're not sure what it is, have a look here:

http://www.overclockers.com.au/techstuff/a_slota/

Other than that, it could be you have the CPU voltage set incorrectly. I don't remember if that board auto-detects voltage, or if it has to be set manually.

Hello jam & everyone.
Thanks for the quick reply.

////////////////////////
yes, i've overclocked my 750 before, but I can also oc the 850 which i think is better to oc than the 750. ( i think i can reach higher #'s with the 850. besides 850 is still 100Mhz more no matter what.
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

-----------------------
This CPU is definitely a K7 Classic A not C
I know Tbird is AO and not compatible.
-----------------------

***********************
The SOYO SY-K7VIA has options to adjust

Voltage: (default/+.05v/ etc. etc.)

FSB : (default/100Mhz/102Mhz/ etc. etc.)

100Mhz(multiplier(7.5))= 750Mhz
The 850 has 8.5 Multiplier

100(8.5)= 850

If oc the 750 FSB to 113Mhz = 847.5Mhz
If oc the 850 FSB to 113Mhz = 960.5Mhz

so this is why I'd rather oc the 850Mhz

Im not sure how much V to add when increasing the FSB. I guess when it's not stable. I've read about it with GFD (gold fingers device)
***********************

The main concern:
-----------------

But anyway, right now im just trying to get the 850 running. so I don't think it's defective and I don't think it's the BIOS.

Both 750 and 850 are A which is .18m
Im not sure the voltage differences but I can only increase in the mobo, so it's either default or add +0.05/etc/etc.

Example: (not actual serial # of my CPU
I remember seeing a T on the 850Mhz

AMD-K7700MTR52B A

Voltage
N 1.8V
P 1.7V
T 1.6V

I will try to increase the v as I cannot decrease and post back.

The 850mhz (A) runs at 1.7v, so if you're at 1.6v, that might explain the instability prob. Hopefully this link will work:

http://139.95.253.213/SRVS/CGI-BIN/WEBCGI.EXE/,/?St=96,E=0000000000181549154,K=5953,Sxi=3,Case=obj(109)

When overclocking, I wouldn't take the FSB higher than 112mhz due to the increasing PCI & AGP speeds...that'd put you at 952mhz. I personally wouldn't go any higher than 1.85v

Hello:

I've replaced the 750Mhz with the 850 with the fresh Windows XP Pro.

Cleared CMOS
Reset CMOS
Changed v to 1.7v

The problem still persists.

Tried different voltages and speeds
but the same problem.

I cannot figure this out.
what is going on here?
all I can think of is that this cpu maybe
damaged, but why only locks up or restarts
when it boots up to the WinXP Pro Splash screen?

(i've read that increasing the FSB is an unstable way to oc rather than increasing the multiplier, in my case with a GFD card to increase multiplier)

Thanks

Well, I believe the cpu is fine, but not 100% sure.

The v seems to be not the issue here as I've tried all kinds of BIOS stuff.

I used safe mode:
it stops at mup.sys then loads to almost deskop (blue) then the mouse pointer just bursts and locks up.

-> XP CD - Repair
-> c:windows>disable mup
restart.....

Guess what! Useless move.

-> Safe mode
: stops at viaagp.sys

I think viaagp.sys is some driver
for some system process device
VIA TECH CPU to AGP Controller

->I didn't disable this

->I modified the boot.ini and used only basevideo

-> well, another waste of time.

-> Loaded XP CD and went to R and md tmp
and copied only necessary start up files into the tmp folder and deleted the main boot file etc. etc.

-> waste of time.

-> I've read probably all the forums about this issue all night and all day and all week, but none worked for me.

-> I reformatted the HD and installed Windows 98 and everything works fine.

-> So the CPU is not malfunctioning

-> XP Pro is not Broke

I don't know what wrong now
Maybe some XP Pro driver isn't working with this CPU, but why does it work with old one. it's the same thing except the speed.

My video card is a Geforce 32Mb
Lates MoBo Bios

wel, i have no clue now.

I will try one more thing and post back

The system is up and running now with Windows98.

Thanks.
